I wonder if it is remembering a setting related to Camera Control tethering? Maybe you can reconnect and then disconnect again normally?
I'd certainly try a reset to factory settings and see if that does the job.
I was trying to think of some function or shooting setting that turns off the LCD but did not have any ideas outside of the Display selection button. Maybe it's sticking?

Fri 08-Jan-21 10:03 AMI connected it again to CCP, then disconnected (turned-off the camera). That did not restore it.
I then reset to factory settings, and that worked. I then did a quick check by connecting to CCP and took a few shots. The LCD still works.
Now I'll go through the process of customizing the settings again (not fun). Then I'll try CCP again to see if the problem repeats. Hopefully not.Mick

Maybe I didn't do it right, but I did save the settings to a card. After I reset the Z 7, it would not let me restore the settings. That option was grayed-out in the menu.Mick

One thing comes to min d. Maybe somebody already mentioned it.
The button on the side of your viewfinder. There are settings for eye viewfinder, live view, and both shut off, as I recall.

I may well be that is what happened. Frequently these things are the common hardware problem of a loose nut behind the viewfinder.
I don't think Nikon Service can fix that.Mick

Sat 09-Jan-21 08:46 AM | edited Sat 09-Jan-21 08:49 AM by luckyphotoWhat I'm noticing is that drivers for some of the apps such as Photoshop Classic, Capture One and Intuos are exhibiting strange behavior with the Rosetta Stone interpreter for Big Sur. This is a long shot, but it could be a driver issue, although I'm struggling to see how the app/driver would change the camera settings like that.
Big Sur was not only a major release for Apple, but also a departure from Intel-based processors to the M1 processors. I also read about a CCP bug related to the Z7 firmware update to 1.01 where they also had to reset to factory default, etc. (Edit - Sorry, this is about a year old bug)
Just a thought. Since CCP is no longer supported, you might want to start searching for an alternative.Larry

The firmware on my Z 7 is v 3.2.
I must have missed something that CCP is no longer supported (actually I am using CCP2, if that makes a difference). The last CCP2 version is what I have installed, v2.33.0 released October 20, 2020. The last update added support for the Z 6 II and Z 7 II.Mick

Sat 09-Jan-21 09:53 AMSorry, that was my mistake. When I first pulled up Nikon Camera Control Pro, the top URL response was a Nikon page that showed only DSLRs plus the bug I found was dated in late 2018. My impression was that CCP was no longer supported.

The search was using Duck Duck Go rather than Google.
Since CCP can manipulate camera settings, I'm still thinking that the CCP drivers may be at odds with either the latest Z7 firmware and/or Big Sur.Larry

I used the camera yesterday and it was fine At the end of the day I was shooting tethered using Camera Control Pro connected to my 2019 MBP.
The firmware is the latest (v3.2). I've tried two different fully charged batteries.
Any suggestions or should I just send it off to Nikon?
