Two nice shots. I cannot answer your question, but one thing I notice - your horizon looks great to me. It appears level, with maybe a minor tilt, but not much.
So that is puzzling to me, as well.

I have an answer to my own question, finally. Yes, the above images exhibit an effect of rolling shutter called skewing.
At least it corresponds to the explanations for it on the wikipedia page.

This skewing is a characteristic of line by line readout of the sensor and is pretty well controlled in the Nikon cameras. You can reduce it or eliminate it by using a high shutter speed, which triggers an increased read rate from the sensor. Silent shutter is not limited in shutter speed but it is limited to below 102k ISOInot a problem with birds in flight unless in a cave).
When moving up to high shutter speeds the speed in which the lines are scanned increases so faster horizontal pans can be done with less or no skew. Slowing your pan rate if you are using low to moderate shutter speeds will help. Skewing is noticed more panning left to right on the Z6.
If you are using a long telephoto, try a wider angle focal length so your degrees of pan per second decreases so the skewing decreases.

I was shooting at 1/800 - do you mean that at, say, 1/2000, I would not have encountered the problem?

BIF in a cave - that opens vast new fields of reflection!

I was panning right to left. I don't want to imagine what it could have done to a locally famous monument if I had panned in the other direction!

Yes, but... birding. Precisely one thing long telephoto lenses are better at than wide-angles ones!

How large is the subject in the frame, were these examples cropped?
Anything you can do to reduce the pan degrees of arc per sec. The further you are the slower the arc of the pan needs to be, with any given focal length lens.
CCD sensors do not have this problem because the way a Charge Couple Device works, it reads the entire frame at the same time instead of stepping through rows that CMOS sensors do.

Nope, those have not been cropped at all. I was shooting my good old 28-300 at close to 300 in both. Gulls are small, after all!

Sorry to sound naive, but here goes: I was trying my still relatively new Z6, inadvertently in silent mode, when I noticed these shots. I was panning, following gulls in AF-C mode, shutter on silent. The mast of the boat was vertical, as are the support of the jetty.
Can anyone enlighten me?
