It's something I wondered about with LV also.
Essentially I would think the EVF is real time video. In video unless the camera is capable of storing the data and combining multiple frames into one capture your shutter speed cannot be longer than the refresh rate. I believe the refresh rate on the Z6 is 60 FPS. So that would limit the shutter speed of one frame to 1/60 th.
To see the effect of a longer shutter speed the camera would have to store all the information over many frames and blend them into one image I would think.Pete

Fri 30-Oct-20 02:37 PMIt seems that experience is the best determiner or the "right" shutter speed, and it will probably differ between photographers.
There are a number of sites on YouTube that address this particular problem very well, but nothing works better than to place yourself beside a stream or other body of water, and take a series of photos at different shutter speeds, then evaluate them once you have your computer monitor handy. Choose your several favorites, write them down...or you will forget...trust me on this...then use them whenever you photograph water. A polarizing filter with its 1 1/2-2 stops of light reduction may be helpful, too.Visit my Nikonians gallery.

I own the Z7, which is a versatile little body. I do in fact, see the light changes run my live view. My application is using the body on the back of my telescope. Looking at the moon, for example, you can see a very bright disc, if you have the aperture wide open and a shutter speed slow (so you can pull more light). So I can see my light is way too much.
Relatively speaking, your shutter speed and the aperture need to work in synch. I did not pick up on whether you were wanting to stop the action, or blur the water. If you were to use a shutter of 1/125 you will stop action where if you used 1.8 second, you will have blur.
Don't forget that with one of those two bodies, the app Snapbridge can synchronize, so you can set up your camera and decrease vibration by using it as a remote to your camera, thereby favoring the stability in your shooting.

You are limited by the refresh rate of the camera. The EVF is like the LCD in LiveView. It's showing a brief view and using the equivalent of gain or ISO to make a dim view brighter. The image you would see is likely to be noisy if aperture and ND filters are used to block the light for a slow exposure.

Just as Carl replied, I do take several shots at different shutter speeds and later on decide the 'correct' shutter speed for the smoothness of the water flow that I like.

Normally, most people shoot moving water at several slow shutter speeds and later on decide which gives the best result for what they have in mind. I would like to know for sure, which shutter speed will give me the effect I am looking for, before I press the shutter release button.
Any guidance will be appreciated. Thanks.
