As nice as the Z50 and kit lenses are, the camera has fairly limited capabilities. But if that is all you need, why spend more.
I just received my 24-200 the other day, and have not had a chance to work much with it. I would prefer it were a 24-300, but...
And, like you, I wish Nikon would release a 70-200 f/4 or a 70-300 f/4.5-5.6. Neither of those seems to be on the horizon.
Waiting for Nikon to release new Z lenses is an exercise in patience.Mick

Sun 18-Oct-20 10:36 AMThe Z50 was a nice kit, but as you said... its limited. I was thinking more of the zoom length. At the moment I am limited to 70mm. I really didn't want to spend the money for F mount if Nikon was going to release Z mount lenses. I could get the f/2.8 70-200, but I don't need 2.8 and that's a waste of money. I would have thought Nikon would have had f4 in their timelines. a 70-200 f4 with a TC would be what I would actually want to get.
So, for now, I guess its a wait and see. If my 24-200 ever ships... its been in my cart from BH and Adorama since May.Visit my Nikonians gallery.

Sun 18-Oct-20 10:50 AMBased on serial numbers, the 70-200 f/2.8 lenses in the three iterations have sold more than 10 times as many units as the 70-200 f/4. And that's with an f/4 version that is pretty good optically.
Nikon will very likely provide an f/4 version of the 70-200 but it may be 2022 or 2023. It would create an f/4 Trinity (14-30, 24-70, and 70-200 if delivered) that aligns with the f/2.8 Trinity (14-24, 24-70, 70-200).
If you want the f/4, there are usually some good deals on used copies of the lens. I'm seeing it from $550-880 with warranties available.Eric Bowles

BTW, there will probably be people who bought the Z50 kit but then put the two kit lenses straight onto the market in favour of something else, so bargains may be there for 'new' lenses.

Sun 18-Oct-20 10:50 AMI will second what Geoff said. At 200mm and longer there’s no optical difference between an F-mount lens and a Z-mount. With the FTZ adaptor you’ll have a lot of choices, both used and new. I shoot a lot with longer lenses, and see no reason to trade for Z mount lenses even when they become more available. The F-mounts lenses all work great on my Z 6.

Sun 18-Oct-20 02:51 PMIt's simply the optical geometry. Once you get to about 190mm and longer there's no difference in the amount of light bending required or light that gets to the sensor - the F-mount is no longer in the way, and optically nothing is different between the F and Z-mounts.
If anyone reports a 200mm Z lens to be sharper than its F-mount equivalent it would only be a result of newer glass/optical technology, and nothing that couldn't be duplicated with a new F-mount lens. I believe it is for this reason that Nikon has been much slower in releasing longer Z-mount lenses - the only physical difference is the spacer length between the mount and the first bit of glass (exit pupil), so there's really no difference between an FTZ adaptor and a lens built for the Z-mount except that the longer tube is a separate piece instead of built into the lens.
There's no way I would spend money on separate Z-mount lenses at 200mm or more unless/until Nikon quits developing anything for the F-mount cameras (since I still shoot with both).
This thread began by talking about zooms, and at the shorter focal lengths the Z-mount does make a difference. At least at the edges but getting more and more important at the wider angles.

Its probably going to be smaller and easier to hand hold if need be. I really don't want to reinvest in the F mount unless I plan to go back to a DSLR. For these zooms.. it's a matter of weight.
I have the FTZ adaptor, but I only use it with F mount primes that I still have.

Mon 19-Oct-20 02:50 PMThe difference is in the electronics and communication between camera and lens. Nikon claims that with a Z lens they can take multiple focus readings up until the shutter opens. That may be why fine tuning is not necessary with Z lenses.Visit my Nikonians gallery.

Mon 19-Oct-20 05:20 PMNone of the reliable testers I know have been able to measure on a quantifiable basis. Steve Perry at one point thought the F-mount D850 was faster than the Z7 for a long lens test, but it was only starting extremely out of focus. He was not able to tell a difference prefocusing. I've also heard the Z lenses on the Z cameras are faster than F-mount lenses on a Z. We do have some perspective even in the F-mount cameras. The D6/D5 cameras are faster focusing than the D850 and D500 - but that's not quantifiable either.Eric Bowles

Mon 19-Oct-20 05:53 PMAF speed on the same lens with different cameras could be related to how much current a camera can deliver. With stepper motors acceleration control is critical. Try to move too fast and the motor will “slip” steps. That will cause focus to end up in the wrong place. Typically when that happens the motor gets loud. Based upon what the camera can deliver and lens being used an acceleration/ deceleration profile is created.Visit my Nikonians gallery.

Mon 19-Oct-20 11:18 PMRight, Allan, the Z mount has more contacts than the F mount for improved communication and control between lens and camera. With the stepping motor this should allow improved AF, improved video, etc. Another of the Z mount advantages that will apply even to the telephotos now in the Roadmap. We'll see..David

Amazon says they have them in stock (4 remaining) as of 10:14 am 10/18, delivery by this Wednesday 10/21.
BH says new supply coming in about a week.

The closest local camera shop is 3 hours away. Portland. And I am not going into that part of town right now

I have been waiting for the 24-200 but its still listed as back ordered. For a couple hundred more I could just get the z50 2 lens kit.
I would rather have a 70-200 f/4 or 70-300 to go along with my 14-30 f/4 and 24-70 f/4. I'm also waiting for that 24-105 to come along and see what that has to offer which would work also. But since Nikon is slow to deliver these days...
