Hiya Thanks for your response! I'd certainly appreciate some geeky assistance thrown my way!
<geekstuff>
Actually, I might be having problems with the scanner itself. It is a Canon FS4000US film scanner and I've been told on some newsgroups that its USB implementation is incompatible with Linux USB in general! I installed Vuescan, got my PC to probe the scanner and all that, but "usbview" does not seem to recognise the scanner - keeps calling it only "usbscanner" and there are lots of error messages in the logs about timeouts.

Sooo... my solution may be to buy a SCSI card for my computer or alternatively use it on my partner's Win2000 laptop... horribly inconvenient, but oh well!
Any thoughts on this?

The first step is to make sure VueScan is up to date with the latest verion - the author has been making a fair number of changes to the FS4000 support recently. It could be very well that the FS4000 USB implementation is a bit weird. The other thing to check is that the USB cable itself is okay.
I've been using a FS2710 with VueScan under Linux, but it's SCSI.
