This month’s challenge theme chosen by Dan Wiedbrauk (domer2760) is "Outdoor Equipment."

With the Spring ANPAT out of the way, this month’s challenge is to take close-up and macro shots of outdoor equipment. Show us images of outdoor gear associated with hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, skating, biking, canoeing, kayaking, equestrian/rodeo activities, birding, landscape photography, sports, … heck, anything done outdoors. Take a closer look at your gear. I’ll bet there’s a wall-worthy macro or close-up image waiting to be discovered.

Photographic subjects are widely varied, and could include fishing lures, rods and reels, camping stove elements, fire starters, headlamps, lanterns, outdoor hooks of all sorts, and even some historical reenactment equipment would qualify. You could photograph tent stakes; climbing gear, flashlights, helmets, bike parts, walking stick parts, gear clips and locks, backpack hardware, carabiners, and water bottles. Maybe the parts of a surveyor’s transit or a gimballed lens mount. How about tire chains, the webbing on lawn chairs, or portable seats used by wildlife photographers? A close-up of an old clamp-on roller skate could also make an interesting image. Other ideas include outdoor knives, hatchets, or axes; hiking shoe or boot laces, eyelets, lugs, and crampons; horse harnesses, saddle details, lariats, riding crops, and carriage parts. Are you nautical? Winches, cleats, lines, knots, and propellers might fill the bill. Sports oriented? Close-ups of baseballs, bats, a golf ball, soccer nets, or other outdoor sports equipment might work. There are lots of image opportunities.

Remember, this is a macro and close-up contest so get close to your subject or crop. With a topic this broad, final judging will be based upon visual impact, composition, color, tone, and storytelling ability.

Participating in our monthly contests can help us to become better photographers. We can see and learn from all of the entries as our members showcase their best work each month.

These monthly contests are the preliminary rounds for the Best of Nikonians Photo Contest, where you have the opportunity to win attractive prizes and have your images highlighted in the Winners Galleries and published in the eZine.

The top images will be selected by the winner of the previous months challenge and will be included in a poll for members to vote for the winning photo. Please keep in mind that images will be selected based on image quality, subject matter, relevance to the theme, and creativity just to name a few.

The number of finalists is based on the number of entrants. We plan on 6 finalists each month but will adjust based on the level of participation.

The winning image will be added to the Monthly Challenge Winner’s Gallery for the Macro and Close-Up Forum, and entered in the Best of Nikonians 2018 contest.

We look forward to seeing how you fulfill this challenge!
Good luck!!!
