Hi Greg,
I think you can ignore whoever wrote you that PM. Your ads are perfectly fine. You have great pictures and adequate descriptions. Some people want essays written about gear being sold, but if it is in perfect shape does one need to elaborate and talk about its perfection in 500+ words? I feel that people have to start somewhere and just because you have little number of posts shouldn't automatically list you as a shady seller. Isn't it also the buyer's responsibility to ask the seller for his/her references such as eBay ID or historic transactions prior to payment? You also ask for PayPal and not the PayPal gift or money order option.
Your post in defending your ads/rep was definitely not needed. You did absolutely nothing wrong. You had a lot of gear to list and you listed them efficiently and went straight to the point.
Best of luck with your sale and I'm sorry to hear about your situation. If I was in the buying season, I'd definitely purchase some of your gear. But actually, I'm selling some of my gear, Craigslist in fact (selling two flashes tomorrow) to fund an engagement ring.
Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas and a happy new year!!-

I don't think that there is anything wrong with your ads, and if I needed any of the equipment that you have advertised, and liked your prices, I wouldn't hesitate to contact you.
I looked at your photography site and really like your work. I'm sorry to hear that you have fallen on hard times and I hope that things get better for you. I know that if I had to sell my equipment that it would be a very sad moment.
I should add, however, that I have purchased a number of things here and generally feel more comfortable when I see the equipment in the seller's profile.

jP

Don't let a PM deter you, all forums have those let's say overly concerned bordering on snobbish posters but well meaning posters. A friendly mind your own business might be one thing to try.
Good luck in your current situation. I've been through it as have others and it does get better.

First of all I agree, your photos are great!! But mostly lets hope the new brings you better luck with you photo business.
The good news is that the person you mentioned had the sense to send you a private message as opposed to posting it on the sales forum!
Your wording looks fine I think the thing you may run into is that you only have nine post.
Its my experience that members take comfort in seeing a lot of post. Some members ( very few I think ) have been taken advantage of in the past so they may be cautious and slow to respond.
If interest is expressed in an item and you sense any hesitation I would offer your direct phone number ( If you dfeel confortable ) and e-mail adress to put any fears at ease. I think direct communication is sometimes the best!
This is a great organization and a great place to buy and sell equipment.
Good luck with your sale, I wish I had the $ to buy some of it!

Oh, I harbor no bad feelings to the person who pointed this out. They took their time to express their opinion and for that, I appreciate it.

He is indeed a stand up guy. Never once did I think otherwise. It discouraged me a bit, that's all. I thought "man! I must have really blown it!" But, indeed, he's a guy that had the best intentions and I appreciate that.

Motive?
I just felt the need to respond to the private message I received. It had me wondering if my ads were perceived in a bad light and hey, I just want to sell my stuff! So, I wanted to make clear that:
I was not "new".
I had done transactions here before.
That's all.

"Sell out"? Please don't suggest that I am merely "selling out".
Do you really think I want to sell my gear off? It took me sooooo much work to acquire it all. I have been trying every conceivable option to NOT sell my gear but, I can't seem to make any money from my photography. Sure I get, and appreciate the comments on my work but, compliments don't pay bills. I can't justify having all this gear when my family has such needs right now.
Anything that can break and need replacing has happened to us the past year. Been hanging on but, now it's winter. This is not fun for me. I'm not doing this for kicks. I'm hardly the only American lately that has fallen on hard times.
But, please don't cast doubt on my reasons for selling. You have no idea how much this hurts not only me but, my family too. They've been my biggest cheerleaders and encouragers. They know how much it means to me.

If you must sell all your DSLR gear, at least hang onto a P&S until times turn around. With your talent, you'll still be able to create fantastic captures, worthy of framing and sale. We tend to forget that most important piece of "gear" is the photographer's vision.

Pine Point, Maine Sunset - August 2010

Thank you sooo much for your kind words. It's making it harder to sell this stuff but, I have to. I checked out your site and feel the same way. Great work!
It's funny. I never thought much about photography really. Then, when circumstances (injury) forced a career change, I went into take some new media courses. I immediately loved Photoshop. Trouble was I had NO camera. This was in 1999. So, I bought one of the first digital cameras. A Kodak with .95 MP's!! It cost me about $900 and ate AA batteries like the cookie monster. Then, I got a Sony DSC-F707. I started to get compliments. So, I saved for a D200. Then I went on to get the D300 and D700. Working on images in PS is what I LOVE to do.
Turns out I have some ties to photography too. The famous Alfred Eisenstaedt photo of VJ Day in Times Square? One of, if not the most famous photograph of all time?
My father is in that photo. I know, I know, many claim to be but, my father truly is. He is the "second most famous man" in that photo. Despite contacting the Eisenstaedt family, Life magazine and other sources, people refuse to acknowledge my claim as anything other than another nut job claiming to have family (or himself) in that photo. My father never received any recognition at all for this. He never wanted it. He told me about this about 2 years before his death in 1995.
Here is an article on my dad in the Portland Press Herald which I scanned:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/bebopredux/4781419773/in/set-72157624486708846
So, it's a strange irony that I got into photography. I wish it would have turned out better but, maybe someday it will. I remain hopeful and trusting that God will allow me success at some point in the field I love dearly.
Sorry about the long post. Just had some espresso!
That Flickr account is indeed mine.

I have spent a great deal of my life there. My parents had a house right down the road from the pier (King St) and my fist job was working at the Poop Deck which is the little house at the end of the pier. I would also clean fish sometimes for tourists coming in from fishing boats right on the end of that pier. It's changed a lot as far as homes there but, I remain very much attached to it. I have spent untold hours on Pine Point beach ruining my skin too.
I took photos for The Landing (the old converted church across from The Clambake) until a few months ago. My photos are in there.
Nice hearing from you.-

One thread with multiple responses has virtually no effect on your add. There are 30 adds per page. If your ad is interesting to someone, people will respond or buy from you. Your post here certainly does you no favor.
There is no limit in the guidelines as to how many items can be placed on the 'I Want To Sell" forum.
Your tablet will sell, you have a job, and you do not have to liquidate your gear to take care of your family, what in the world do you have to complain about?

I'm a lurker most of the time too, and like you, I have had a couple of "ID" changes on Nikonians, but I can truly tell my fellow Nikonians that I have seen your name on this forum from time to time over the past several years, and are in fact the "real deal," and I wish you nothing but the best for you and your family during what must seem to be absolutely deplorable times. I know the feeling brother: I sold all my D3X and D700 equipment and lenses because I was really pressed for cash and now have only a D7000 and two lenses "10-24mm and 18-200mm," but feel blessed that I have anything at all with the Nikon name on it.

Carl, Cole & Others,
I'm the one who feels blessed. I've had such heartfelt and encouraging emails, you wouldn't believe it. All very touching and in some cases, tear inducing.
I'm one who always puts things in perspective. No, this isn't how I planned things to work out but, I look at what others are going through and my situation pales by comparison. Hey, we're not homeless or losing our home. I've got a great, close family. So, it's hard for me to complain about it. It was a near miracle I was able to obtain my gear in the first place. I've enough faith to believe it'll happen again too. If not, well, that's fine as well.
So, now I'm down to the D300 and the D700 bodies with battery grips, a Nikon 50 f/1.8 lens and CF cards, monopod and tripod and other various accessories.
Thanks very much to all.

To chime in - I purchased Greg's 24 - 70. It's a beauty and I haven't taken it off my camera since I got it. Nice doing business with you Greg.

G
In it, well, I'll quote part of it:
"Read your ads. Nice lenses. It seems your brand new on the forum.
Just my opinion, any ad that even remotely smells of craigslist is often ignored. I see it time and time again. Your ad will probably not garner much if any interest because of its brevity, your newness and the tone of it(24-70mm). I mean no disrespect to you, but if your lens is great, the price is fair and people feel like they can trust you, it'll sell quickly. People look to see if you have any interest in the forum other just selling."
I have been a Silver member for 4 years (approx). I've lurked here mostly but, read everything and even have a Nikonians hat! When I renewed my membership recently, I inadvertantly changed my user name to "gpfahey" instead of my usual "gfahey". I have bought and sold here. I don't know how to search for those transactions but, I am being truthful.
I'm 56 years old and have a wife and 3 kids. It's been a tough year. Very tough. My usual gig of being a house photographer at a live music event venue was terminated and I can't make a penny with my photography. I never did finish my site but, take a look here:
http://gregfaheyphotography.com/
I had to make the tough decision to sell all my gear. Believe me, it's heartbreaking for me to do this. This was to be my "new career" but, things never did pan out.
I had no idea my ads would be construed as Craigslist-like in nature. That makes me cringe. I made it clear for people to contact me with any questions. I have a phone.I have email. I am real.
I've also got a D700, D300, Domke bag, 2 monopods, a tripod, CF cards, battery grips, card readers, Lowe packs, straps, a LOT more gear. All my gear is well taken care of and top of the line. Most is hardly used. My prices seem to be fair as I have looked at what others are selling them for.
So, I felt the need to address this. Hey, maybe a moderator here could verify my membership and past transactions? Either way, I apologize for my ads and the fact that maybe I appear as "new" here by virtue of my silence.
Sincerely,
Greg
