I have only used NX-D occasionally but I believe the default rendering is using the settings of the camera and the rendered image will be approximately what a camera generated JPEG would look like..
When shooting NEF's, you can then change to any of the other PC settings with NX-D,,, but the settings in the NEF remain the same. Granted the generated image will now appear on screen reflecting your new choice of PC.
Hope my explanation was clear and answered your question.Pete

mklass Nikonian since 08th Dec 2006Thu 01-Nov-18 06:06 PMNX-D will one the in camera Picture Control selection when rendering the NEF. The embedded JPG thumbnail is also based on this setting.
You can, of course, change the setting in NX-D and save the file in another format, but NX-D does not update or rewrite the NEF. It only reflects the change in its sidecar file.
Other software ignores the NEF’s Picture Control setting, and use their own algorithm to render the NEF.Mick

I am of the opinion that opening an image in NX-D that has been shot in RAW format displays the Picture Control Style (PCS)set on the camera at the time i.e. Vivid etc. Therefore my question is, can the file be viewed as shot, in other words, the capture directly off the sensor? Or is this the PCS corresponding to 'Neutral', both on the camera/in NX-D? 'Recorded Settings' simply renders the image with the PCS settings when shot, which includes the actual PCS on the camera. If there is a switch or drop down list option I cannot find it.
I shoot with a D800.
Many thanks,
