As far as I can tell,,, you can't really control where it is sampling from. But have had limited success in using a smaller size and working in small strokes moving in from an area that you prefer sometimes helps. But there's no guarantee.Pete

Rick19744 Nikonian since 30th Mar 2016Thu 28-Dec-17 08:31 PMI agree with Pete on this. This "repair" is not a photoshop equivalent. See the attached from the instructions:
This tool lets you eliminate spots, dust, and other small undesirable elements, by “painting” over them with a line or point (of adjustable thickness or diameter).
After you click on the Repair tool button in the upper command bar or in the Repair sub-palette, all you need to do is to zoom in on the image (or press the Space bar to temporarily activate the Hand tool) to navigate in the image to look for dust specks, and to set the size of the Brush width slider (up to 200 pixels) located under the Viewer, or by using the Ctrl/Cmd key + your mousewheel. Then simply click on a dust speck, or trace a line by holding down the mouse button. The corrections are visible any level of image enlargement.Visit my Nikonians gallery.

Here is a great example of my problem.
It may not be the best photo anyway, but for the sake of argument, assume that you want to save this one.
Looking up in the right corner, you can see where I tried to use repair tool to paint over offending limb fragments. But what i end up with, is repainting part of the tree trunk/limbs from elsewhere. I tried CTRL to select the right area for the "paint", ALT, CMD (Apple), SHIFT, and combinations thereof. For a while, I thought CTRL was working. It did for a while , but the closer I got to the trunk, the worse it got.
