A lot of people have been wondering about the new release of Luminar 2018 as a photo editing solution. If you are one of those, I just posted a review at this website: https://improvephotography.com/50700/luminar-2018-new-photo-editing-solution/

With my recent upgrade from the D800 to the D850 I need to also upgrade my software. The version of Nikon Capture I was using does not support the D850, and Nikon’s “upgrade” to that package seems to removed features that I was using. I was using Lightroom 4 and planned to upgrade to LR 6, until Adobe announced that that product was also moving to a cloud/rental model, so I’m looking to replace my Adobe products.
I’m an enthusiast, and do not make any income from photography, so these are expenses, not investments for me.
Have you seen any comparisons between Capture One at $299 versus Luminar at $69? Is Capture One really worth the extra $230 ?Visit my Nikonians gallery.

I don't think you'll see Capture One and Luminar compared a whole lot. Capture One has been premium priced, and its market is a bit more narrow. From what I've read over many years, I get the sense that there is a pro market for Capture One and those that use it are very, very, happy with it. I don't get the sense that it is as much for the enthusiast market.
I used to use Apple Aperture until Apple abandoned the product, and then went back to Lightroom. Like you, I do not want to go on the rental model. My big concern isn't the $10/month. It is that I get more deeply invested in the tool and then they raise the price to $20 month and I'm in too deep. And while I used to make a good buck, I'm now retired, so I'm a bit more careful with expenses for my hobby than I used to be.
I've looked around a lot and been using ON1, and I think they are also coming out with a DAM module. ON1 has a lot going for it and some great masking tools. But it's kind of a big learning curve and a lot of work to get a picture the way I want it (and I'm not one that wants to spend a ton of time editing a photo).
Luminar has a 14-day free trial as I mentioned, and I think if you keep an eye, some of these companies are giong to have a sale for Christmas.
