One possibility is that you have the camera set to sRAW, the "small" RAW format which is available with some of the later Nikon cameras. DxO does not support that format.
I do not "import" files from the camera to DxO, I save the camera files to a folder on my hard drive first. When I open DxO I use the "organize" tab (upper left) to find the folder. When you save your files on your computer do they show a .NEF suffix? I believe only Capture NX-D is capable of processing Nikon sRAW files, but have never used this file format.Visit my Nikonians gallery.

Many thanks for your quick response.

I have just bought a D500 - brilliant camera.
But DxO 10 imports the D500 images as JPEG - even though the D500 is definitely, positively set to Raw.
I have tried a free download of DxO 11 but I have the same problem.
Can anyone help please?
