First is the external HD a USB drive or a NAS?
If a USB drive and both RAW files and Lr catalog are on it,
then as long as it is mapped to the same drive letter on both machines you can just plug it in and run Lr.
On the other hand,
RAW files can be located on a network drive. However Lr catalogs cannot be located on a network drive. It is, so I've heard, possible to use a SymLink bypasses this restriction. In either case, Lr catalogs are single user, not multi user databases. Only one Lr session per catalog at a time.
I keep my RAW files on a NAS and use an external USB HD for my Lr catalogs.
As long as the RAW file directory is mapped to the same drive letter I can connect the USB drive to either machine an run Lr.
Hope this helps...Take only pictures. Leave only footprints.

Hi Steve
The external drive is just a USB drive.
I have so far just been using Lightroom with a small sample of pics, loaded onto the laptop hard drive. I wanted to learn how to use it before undertaking the marathon task of converting all my old pics to LR.
Now that I think LR is probably the best tool going forward I have exported all my originals from the iMac onto the external drive. The next step will be to import all of them into LR, using the laptop to start with. I presume there is an option to save the catalogue information onto the external HD as well. I have been using Scott Kelly's book mostly thus far and have found it very helpful.
If that's all I require it should be pretty straight forward to then use it on both computers.
I will get started and post how I go. Might take a while though.
Thanks
Andrew

Hi again
I have all my photos and LR catalog on external USB HDD, and it works on both iMac and windows laptop.
The only problem is I can only access the catalog when the hdd is plugged in.
Can I have a copy of the LR catalog on each computer as well, and can they be set up to synchronise automatically?
Regards
Andrew

I recently started using Lightroom cc.
I have it installed on a windows based laptop and an iMac desktop 27". So far I have only been using it on the laptop as is newer, has a faster processor and 16gb of ram. iMac is older 2010 model with only 4gb ram, but does have the big 27" monitor.
I have all my photos on a separate external HD which can be read on both machines.
My question is, if I want to use LR on both computers, using the one external HD is that possible? Or would it be better to have two separate drives and separate catalogues, one for each machine? Can I have one LR catalogue to use on both computer?
I may be making life unnecessarily complicated but thought I'd see if anyone does anything similar.
Regards
Andrew
