tucsonguy Registered since 23rd May 2019Sun 10-May-20 10:06 PMWell, 3 years later I'm going to give Topaz Studio a try.
But the question is still out there - has anybody used this and if so, what do they think?
I'll report after using it a bit.. but hope someone else out there has got more experience on it and can tell us more about it!Visit my Nikonians gallery.

mklass Nikonian since 08th Dec 2006Sun 10-May-20 11:17 PMTopaz has taken what used to be of their individual PS plug-in and combined them into Studio 2. I believe it costs $99US. The AI applications (Mask, DeNoise, Sharpen, Gigapixel, Adjust, JPG to RAW) are separate and sold individually or as a bundle.
I've always like Topaz Impressions, and their DeNoise AI and Sharpen AI can work wonders. Gigapixel is also great of you want to make an image very large.Mick

rbaskin Nikonian since 05th Feb 2007Tue 26-May-20 04:28 PMI don't use Topaz Studio, but I tried Topaz Sharpen AI. I had an image from a shoot I did for a band that they really wanted to use on their CD cover (shout out to Project Grand Slam in NYC). It was pretty out-of-focus, but I said I would try. I worked it in Photoshop and Focus Magic and then tried the trial version of Sharpen AI. I was very impressed. I'm attaching the original RAW conversion, the PS version and the Topaz version.
It has can do three types improvement: Sharpen, Stabilize, and Focus in either automatic or manual mode. Biggest caveat is that is is EXTREMELY SLOW. Every time you make a choice or adjustment it re-scans the image and that can take 30 sec to a minute depending on the image. Also, if you want to be able to use the results with a mask you need to work your image as a smart object, otherwise it shows up as just an adjustment on the current layer.
Not perfect nor is it for every image, but it works as another arrow in my processing quiver.

I have used Topaz Sharpen AI since it first came out, and there have been many improvements. If you don't have the latest version, get it. It includes the ability to Mask in Sharpen AI. Plus, it is faster than the older versions.
You can eliminate the nagging lag as it reprocesses each time you make a change by unchecking the Auto-Update Preview box on the right just below the navigator. Then you just click the update button when you want to redraw. Viewing the preview at 100% rather than 50% is also faster. (This has been true of all versions of Sharpen AI, not just the latest.)
Of course the capabilities of your computer can make a big difference. I am running a 2019 15" 2.4GHz MacBook Pro with 32GB RAM, 1Tb SSD and Radeon Pro 560X 4GB Graphics. This is much faster than the 2013 MBP that it replaced.
It is slower than unsharp mask in PS or other editing apps - Yes. But it is no longer the slug that it once was, and it is much more capable that the built in sharpening in editing apps.
DeNoise AI is similarly capable at noise reduction.Mick

rbaskin Nikonian since 05th Feb 2007Wed 27-May-20 09:16 AMThanks for the tips Mick, much appreciated! You don't get a lot of obvious explanation of features or instructions with software these days. The last download I have is from late March, so I'd think I'm up-to-date. I don't get a maskable layer unless I open it as a smart filter, but that's not a problem.
Re: configuration, I'm running a 2 year old Acer with an I7 processor, 16 gb memory, an SSD (although the image is on an external HDD), and a Nvidia 940 with 2 gb. Not top of the line, but in the ball park.Ralph in CT

mklass Nikonian since 08th Dec 2006Wed 27-May-20 09:25 AMRalph,
You don't have a masking brush in Sharpen AI when you just select Sharpen AI as a filter in PS?
It is located here, on the top-right portion of the screen:
This is for masking in Sharpen AI directly, not in PS.

I came across this video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7A5aDTqLn0
I've only heard of Topaz Labs but I don't know too about the software and have never used it. What caught my attention was around 1:40 into the video, the narrator states that there is no longer a license key required to use this software. The only thing you have to do is register for a free account. Like I mentioned earlier, I don't know too about the software and have never used it. I just wanted to pass this along in case any members are interested so please remember, I'm only the messenger ...
