Sun 01-Jan-17 01:37 AMThe Datacolor Spyder5 is easy to use and works well. I am very happy with it. It comes in three models that vary in features and price. I have also used devices by X-Rite with good results.

Tue 03-Jan-17 09:13 AMBased on each of these recommendations i began researching, which lead me to some online reviews. There are several reports from individuals who tried to calibrate their iMac monitors and ended up with display colors that were way off, and then had a difficult time reversing the damage. Of course, these could have been due to human error. Can any of you other iMac users offer me some helpful tips before I go down this road?

• Buy one of the calibrators.
• Follow the directions (usually screen prompts).
• Done.
There’s really no issue here. About the only things that will screw up calibration are (1) strong ambient light hitting the screen, and (2) inability to follow simple screen prompts. And if things do go sideways, you can always revert to Apple control — go to System Preferences > Display > Color and you will see what is going on right now. You can even run the Apple calibrator, but it does not do much.

Stick with either X-Rite or DataColor and you will be fine. Before you buy I would call both companies and ask which model or package they recommend for your iMac and the level of printing you plan on doing. By level of printing I mean, are you printing for your own needs or for professional purposes, etc.
BTW, there is no way to incur irreversible damage to your monitor or video system. If something goes terribly wrong all you have to do is re-set your monitor settings to their default settings and delete the ICC monitor profile that was created by the profiling software from your system folder. I recently started printing again, but now notice that my iMac 27 is in some serious need of calibration. Can someone please recommend a calibration tool that will work with an iMac 27" purchased circa 2012? To be honest, when I had a windows machine a long time ago and attempted calibration, I was never impressed with the results; but that was early in my hobby, so it's likely I was doing something wrong.
