Luke_Miller Nikonian since 19th Apr 2006Thu 10-Mar-16 11:13 AMI prefer the colors from Capture One (particularly skin tones) over those of Lightroom, although the difference is not dramatic. If I create my own camera profile for Lightrom they are very close. To me the Lightroom catalog functions make it preferable as my primary raw converter. I go to Capture One if I am having trouble getting the colors I want. If you don't use the catalog I think C1 is an excellent choice. Version 9 improved the integration with Photoshop.
Capture One works fine with my DNG files. Two of my bodies use DNG as the raw format plus DNGs produced from NEF files by the Adobe DNG Converter or as a Lightroom export work fine as well. -

I think this has been debated endlessly, but since it is endless I'll offer my two cents.
DNG is mostly a solution in search of a problem, at least for most people and workflows. While there are some minor benefits (checksum validation of image data), to me they are offset by the need to keep yet-another copy of the image around (assuming you save the NEF's, whether inside or separate). THey are also offset by lack of support in some products.
The argument that it will be a better archival format is not without merit, but I think are misplaced in time -- if one day NEF is about to become unsupported, push the button then and convert all your NEF's. It's only computer time (and computers will be a lot faster then). And when that happens, in the distant future (as it will not happen soon!) then maybe there will be an even better archival format than DNG available.
I do not necessarily see it as a bad thing so much as an unnecessary thing.

Actually, I use the catalog and collection function of LR a lot, particularly I found that using these two together really helps me to manage my photos in a far easier manner.
Regarding conversion, sadly, I do not keep the NEF files, I simply delete these files once the conversion is completed, and I also do not embed NEF files in DNG. I found that LR works much faster if I convert to DNG, but now I am thinking whether I should work with native RAW files rather than converting them to DNG. Interestingly, for my new D7200 RAW files, I found that DNG does not offer any size advantage, rather for some photos the sizes are bit higher than the NEF files.
I generally do not shoot fashion or portraits that much unless it is a part of "travel photography". So"skin tone" has never been an issue for me.http://500px.com/sriroyc

Luke_Miller Nikonian since 19th Apr 2006Fri 11-Mar-16 05:26 AMI've not found a need to convert NEFs to DNGs. The DNG files produced by my Leica bodies co-exist with the NEFs from my Nikons. Lightroom and Capture One work happily with both of them. Converting my NEFs to DNGs just seems like additional work with no (IMO) gain. But I don't think those who prefer to do so are giving up anything other than their time.

On the question of DNGs, I will use DNGs if I need to send files for grading by an outside operator. In this case, sending 24MP files via Dropbox takes forever, while I can send DNGs of smaller dimension (depending on the end usage). So the format itself isn't better, just the ability to export RAWs of various size is.

Actually I found that newer NEF files from D7200 are even a bit smaller in size from their converted DNG counterpart. I also found that while using DNG in LR6, it seems to work faster and displays the changes I make instantly.

Bettsy Registered since 11th Mar 2016Fri 11-Mar-16 07:23 PMCorrect and correct. However, as part of the conversion process, you are able to specify the size of the resultant file. Given I shoot at 24MP and, for a certain part of my business, I have to submit 4MP jps, I export 8MP DNGs. Now this won't work for all jobs but it reduces the upload times a lot. Why not just export jpegs? Because I want to give the post house access to the full range of grading options.

Lightroom and Photoshop use the same raw converter, just presented with a different user interface.

I have been using LR for some time and at present it is LR6. Recently I have been reading about capture one pro 9 and I found quite a few photographers are revving about this and claiming it to be superior while working with proprietary RAW files like NEF. It is being said that C1 treats the RAW files much better than LR6 and also the output is better. So I am bit confused now and thinking whether I should make a switch. I have downloaded the trial version of C1 but frankly found it very different from LR6 (naturally) and the UI bit non-user friendly. My workflow includes Ps and I am rather "minimalist" when it comes to PP. Primarily my works are for agencies and to be displayed online.
So I would request you to comment and advise on the following:
1. Is it worth switching to C1 from LR6?
2. I have been converting my files to DNG from NEF(I know that C1 does not handle Adobe DNG files that well, so even if I switch to C1 I shall start with my new photos)while importing using LR. So I actually edit the DNG files instead of NEF. Is it a right decision or should I continue to work with NEF files even if I continue with LR in future?
I know that these issues might have been discussed a number of times on web (or here), but I would like to know the views of my esteemed fellow members before taking a final decision.
Thank you.
