RE: F5 maintenance (MKHurder)

Does anyone in the Bay area know of a place to bring an F5 for repair/tune-up? Not sure if there is even a call for a tune-up on these guys but I would imagine there is. I just can't find anyone who does it locally. Mike's Camera is the only real camera shop near me and they wont touch film cameras. I can't say for sure that I have an actual camera issue but I think a check up would tell; if I could find a place that did such a thing.

The problem I'm having occurs with shooting daytime images. Many seem "washed out" even though the meter says I'm right on the money exposure-wise. I understand there are optimal times for shooting and that bright daylight isn't one of those. Admittedly, that's when this problem seems most prevalent. Also it seems to worsen depending on the position/height of the sun...etc. Am I expecting too much to be able to eliminate the harsh lighting and get a good exposure? Is there an optimal metering method in this type of light? (Spot/Area/WideArea) EG: Should I have metered for the sky in the attached example?

At any rate, a tune-up couldn't hurt, right? So...suggestions anyone? If not in the Bay Area, is there a place you'd bother to send it?

Hi, I don't know of any local repair, but I would send it to Authorized Photo Service in Morton Grove IL. They did a great job on my F3, F4, and FA. Here is a link to their main site.

Michael:

I've used California Precision in Sacramento for my service work, and recommend them. Right now, they have my D3X to repair the eyepiece curtain - jammed open and will not close - and to clean the D3X's sensor and calibrate it with my 24-70/f2.8.

In my opinion unneeded work done on a camera isn't a good idea.
second I am not sure your camera has a problem with exposure.
What kind of film do you use?

  Fuji Color 200 mostly, some 400 in clouds or lo-light but that was 200. I generally match SS w/ISO in bright sun. Aperture was at f16. Had I taken a picture behind me just then, it would have exposed better I believe. Sun's over my left shoulder. I do have a hood on but no filters. I honestly feel I'm just not metering properly. Thinking also that if I used the zone system I might have got a better exposure, but in the moment, I don't always think of such things and of course, working with film, you don't know 'til you get it in the darkroom. Well, "I" don't know!
  I think periodic maintenance is a good thing. I always have with every piece of equipment I've owned and/or worked on. This camera has had no maintenance that I know of. When I bought it a year ago, it had only been checked out and deemed fully functional. ;~)

    The image look likes underexposed to me although it's very light. Photo finishers tend to make print very light especially underexposed negative. I found the F5 tends to underexpose color negative film.
    You can send it in to Nikon for exposure evaluation and they can test it quite easily with the right tool (some of the tools we can't buy even if we want to like the software to fine tune the exposure meter and shutter speed).
    However, I believe it would come back in exact same condition as Nikon would deem there is no problem with the camera.

      I'll take that under advisement. It makes sense, really, I get great pics sometimes but not always and it usually seems to be around mid-day on a sunny day that this happens.

I know it's expensive but if you try some slide film the result would be great.

  Yes I did. the results are much the same either way. I had the camera shop print that frame from the negative to see if it was the scanner. Printing showed it was just as underexposed.
