I have not done enough good testing of Wide AF modes to know how good they are. Group - which the two wide modes replaced - was pretty good. This adds some refinement because you can choose larger or smaller wide areas. It always takes some field testing to work out exactly where to switch between alternatives.
I saw Thom's comment - but did not see whether his misses could be attributed to other factors. He still plans more testing. No AF mode will be accurate all the time for a moving subject unless you have fantastic technique and a relatively easy subject.
