They won't move the vertical L to the right side. It would be in the way of the grip, cards, and shutter controls.
In recent brackets, there have been some different approaches to make sure there is access to the HDMI port and other ports on the left side. That should continue.
The main issue is the small ridges that wrap around the front and rear edges of the camera bottom and keep the bracket from turning. These ridges usually mean every camera body has needed a new L-bracket or camera plate. But it will depend on the width of the L-bracket and footprint of the camera in the grip portion.
Nikon had choices - they could design a constant camera base so L-brackets and plates work across multiple cameras. That could allow battery grips to work in multiple cameras as well.
