47. Develop Module - Before and After preview and History

Article 47 of 100

You saw a similar image on this site yesterday but today I will try to explain how the Before and After preview and History features work. I have to say that I love this feature, but it sure makes me wish that I still had that 30" Cinema Display on my desk (I am traveling at the moment so that is kind of impossible, but we can dream).

I have been making second copies of images in Adobe Lightroom just so I could see what the image looked like before I started to work on it. And just like most of you I have a problem remembering what I did to an image, more than four or five adjustments and filters ago. Now I guess I don't really have to worry about that any more.

Adobe Lightroom

The top is the image at the beginning of a Develop session, and the bottom is the current version of that image.

The History panel on the left is also new and now gives a complete history of all changes made by the Develop Module. The History of an images changes starts the first time you make a change in the Adobe Lightroom Beta 3 Develop Module and stays with that image from then on. This solves the problem of having to constantly export images out of a non-destructive editing environment to keep a record of the changes you have made to an image. Fantastic.

Hey, how many times have we all over processed an image in the darkroom and wish we had left it alone. Now we can go back in time, correct our past mistakes and even recapture an earlier moment of accidental brilliance.

2. The Before view option.

3. Side by side Before and After view option.

4. Top and bottom Before and After view option.

5. A crop tool.

6. Red, Green, Blue values indicator for where the cursor is pointing in an image.

7. Apply the Before values to the After image.

8. Apply the After values to the Before image.

9. Split Screen (I haven't tested this yet).
