Adobe Lightroom - Preferences
Article
23 of 100
The
current Adobe Lightroom Preferences
are fairly basic and self explanatory. There are two dialog
boxes one for General
Preferences and one for File
Management Preferences.
The
General Preferences dialog box has three basic settings that
can be turned on or off, Show
splash screen during startup, Automatically check for updates
and Build previews
in background.
The
next selection is for handling memory cards. When
a memory card is detected either Do
Nothing or Show
Import Dialog. I prefer to Do Nothing because
I like to make at least one copy of my images before I entrust
them to any image handling software.

In
the Adobe Lightroom Photo menu there is a default Edit in
Photoshop CS2 command in place but one additional external
editor can be added under Additional
External Editor, which will then show up in
the Adobe Lightroom Photo menu.
Separate
Completion Sounds
are selectable for both When
finished importing files play: and When
finished exporting files play:. The sounds
are, Basso, Blow, Bottle, Frog, Funk, Glass, Hero, Morse,
Ping, Pop, Purr, Sosumi, Submarine, and Tink.

The
File Management
dialog box allows you to chose the location of your Managed
Photos database. This is very important and
deserves some thought. I have left it in the default position
on my internal hard disk drive for the moment but that is
only because I am not yet committing my entire image library
to Adobe Lightroom. Why? Because this is still a Beta application.
When the actual version 1 of Adobe Lightroom
becomes available I will probably dedicate a very fast external
hard disk drive to the task of housing my Managed photos database.
This way I will be able to store it safely when necessary
and hopefully migrate it easily from one computer to another
when that situation arises.
Always
keeping the Image Cache Size
preferences at large, fast
is important if you value your sanity, I can't imagine why
you would want to set it at small,
slow, unless it was absolutely necessary (but
then you are probably using the wrong computer, or are in
need of an upgrade of some sort).
The
Metadata preferences
selector allows you to Automatically write changes into XMP
sidecar files. Important but apparently the whole process
is not quite working right yet. We should be getting close
to another Adobe Lightroom Beta upgrade soon though, so I
wouldn't worry about it too much.
P.S.:
Please do not get upset if your personal experience and views
are different from my own. These opinions are mine exclusively
and do not reflect the views or policies of any of the manufacturers
mentioned in this article...... George
