Nikon SB-800 with GF WhaleTail Reporter (White Flaps)

Direct flash, head straight forward with a Whaleail Reporter.

Front flap down, back flap down.

That diffuses both the light coming in from the front of the diffuser and that going upwards to be bounced from the ceiling.

Light balancing is perfect. No shinny spots on the vase. No dark spots on the bronze figure.

Straight forward flash

This time the back flap goes up, increasing the light to be bounced from the ceiling.

The flap can be removed completely very easily so it won't fall accidentally either to the back or the front.

The image is lighter and yet in perfect balance.

the shadow under the corner of the hanging frame is barely visible.

At 60 degrees

This time both flaps are at front, warming a bit more the scene, reducing light output and making the bouncing light stronger. (See the more noticeable shadow under the hanging frame).

Light balance is simply ravishing. It will be hard to beat.

Comments

The GF WhaleTail is as good or better than the proven Lighsphere II System of flash diffusion, depending on conditions. It indeed provides plenty of flexibility and balances light superbly.
