OVERVIEW

Tamron released a compact lightweight high speed medium range zoom and macro lens. It is the ....

Tamron SP AF 28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical [IF] Macro Zoom Lens

This brief review will attempt to describe the lens, give an indication of its quality, and meaningfully compare it with a well-known Nikkor zoom in the same price range.
.

Note that there are a number of Nikkors which could be compared with the new Tamron. These include:

  • 24-85mm f/2.8-4D AF

  • 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G AF-S

  • 28-70mm f/2.8 AF-S

  • 35-70mm f/2.8d AF

  • 28-105mm f3.5-4.5

Of these lenses, the Tamron is closest to the 35-70mm f/2.8D AF Nikkor in terms of size, weight, range and speed. However this lens costs AU$1,000 more.

Nikkor 35-70mm f/2.8D AF: US$685 (USA) and US$580 (Imported)
Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Asph IF: US$330
*Prices rom B&H as of October 22, 2003

As I only have ready access to the Nikkor 28-105mm, this is the lens I will use to base comparisons on.
