Well, below you can see some quick sample images. They are not yet at par with those from fellow Nikonians at the Wildlife Photography Forum, but they show that the Manfrotto 393 works very well. The lens used is indeed a monster and takes a while to get used to it, but on the described support it is a breeze to use.

My flatbed scanner clearly has its limitations ... however, you may get a good idea of the possibilities of this simple but clever contraption.

Anyone thinking about getting a long lens support may find worthwhile to also consider this alternate one. A good buy I would say.
