No. 0036 - Released January 31, 2008
International photo community offers help for photographers shifting to the digital era.
Nikonians, the friendly international home for Nikon enthusiasts on the Web, has teamed up with Hewlett-
Packard and Datacolor to share digital darkroom techniques with all photographers.
The expert advice gathered from this international community comes in the form of a unique one-day workshop
prepared by the Nikonians Academy throughout North America this year. The workshops deliver basic and
advanced level training, with students preparing their images and making prints during class while gathering
tips from a professional photographer.
Nikonians Academy Director Mike Hagen has arranged to provide the latest inkjet printing technology and
monitor calibration tools to share proven methods for developing photo images in the digital darkroom.
"All of the techniques we're showing are applicable to digital workflow and printing regardless of the
type of software or printer you are using. The fact that we have HP printers means that we are able to
show in real time the results of the changes we make in our software." Hagen describes the typical
pitfalls encountered by photographers trying to produce images from a digital camera as "a mix of many
elements that can easily be explained".
The explanation is easy according to Nikonians co-founder J. Ramón Palacios. "It's not the brand of
equipment," he says. "It's your ability to control the basic elements. Our workshops concentrate
on those basics and the lessons learned are compatible with a broad spectrum of software and hardware.
We are fortunate to have HP and Datacolor providing the top of the line products and that serves as a
benchmark".
The Nikonians Academy Streamlined Digital Workflow & Inkjet Printing workshop teaches in one day how to
use your own computer system to achieve great prints, starting from your RAW files. The one-day workshops
in a small class environment are currently available in Orlando, New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles,
Cincinnati, Portland, Atlanta and Washington D.C. Full Schedule information is available at the
Nikonians Academy.
The printers will be HP Photosmart Pro B9180 wide-format inkjets capable of printing 13 x 19" fine art
prints on a wide variety of papers at a resolution up to 4800 dpi. Color management tools will be the
Datacolor Spyder3 Studio units. These provide the industry's only seven detector color engine and largest
light aperture, allowing the workshop to demonstrate LCD, CRT and laptop calibration.
Also available are 4-day Advanced Digital Imaging Workflow workshops, full immersion courses
where the Nikonians Academy team will take your workflow and inkjet printing to the highest
level. The Nikonians Image Doctors, Jason Odell and Rick Walker, will be joining Mike Hagen for
the two events scheduled for April in San Francisco and June in Dallas, with a full digital
imaging and printing lab prepared for use by all attendees.
