The best book I can recommend is Scott Kelby's Photoshop CS2 for Photographers. He gives you step by step insrutuctions for all the basic techniques that you are likely to need. Once you have mastered this and want something more advanced you could check out other books such as Martin Evening's excellent CS2 and CS3 books which are much more in-depth. Also there are plenty of excellent tutorials on the web just google photoshop tutorials and you'll find loads.
Good luck

Seconded. Real examples step by step with lots of pictures of CS2 in action of real processing. With a bit of humor thrown in to keep you awake. I am on CS3 and it is still right next to me as my primary reference.

Since someone already suggested Martin Evening's Adobe Photoshop for Photographers, I'll give you another instead, as it is a step by step cookbook type book with exercises. It is called Adobe Photoshop CS2 One-on-One by Deke McClelland. Once you get the basics down, than read these two books by Dan Margulis: Professional Photoshop Fifth Addition and Photoshop LAB Color. Caution, the last two books are not for beginners, but in my mind they are the best books on photoshop. They are not an easy read, but when you are finished you will have learned some amazing things and will understand why you do things in photoshop as well as how. Most other books show you how. Martin Evening's book is very comrehensive and he pretty much covers everything about photoshop in his book, it is my favorite behind Margulis's books. IF you start off with Deke's book, you will get up to speed very quickly. Also besure to take advantage of all the free tutorials on line.

I just acquired a D40 and a friend gave me a free (fully-legal) copy of CS2. I have no idea where to begin with CS2, and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a good book that will talk me through the fundamentals for CS2 newbies. I want a book I can keep at my side, on the desk , rather than web site tutorials that I'd need to keep running while I use the program.
Whenever I mention CS2 to someone, they usually tell me that it's for Pros (which I am not) and too hard to learn. Nevertheless, I have it and I don't want to waste the gift by not using it, but I don't know where to begin.
Any suggestions are welcome.
