Buy low, sell high? Of course. But sell low, buy high? Nonsense. And that's the question. There's no invisible hand but ours driving the price of D200's down. We're so eager to have the next best thing, that we've all abandoned reason.

You're talking about a depreciation asset. Buy low, sell high, only really applies to things that are expected to grow in value over time. Digital cameras aren't one of those things.

The D300 has some features that are important to some people. However, its sensor's greater resolution probably exceeds that of the majority of lenses. Are Nikonians shooting billboards now? I think this is largely a status game. At these prices--half of what a D300 costs--keep your D200 as a spare body. Does anyone remember that these are great cameras?
This appears to be a great time to buy glass.

I agree. The D200 is a fantastic camera. I will continue using mine, upgrade to the D300 in a year or so and keep the D200. If there are any bugs in the new D300's, they should be fixed by the time I'm ready to get one.
I'm in no hurry.

The introduction of the D300 benefit's everyone. The D200 owners move up to the latest and greatest, and the D80 owners get the obsolete D200's (more sarcasm), at a reasonable price. Everyone is happy. By the way, I fall into the D80 moving up to a D200 club.

Your post, while factually accurate, misses the point of the original post which is that D200 owners didn't have to sell their D200's a cut rate prices in order to own a D300. If everyone who wanted owned a D200 but who wanted a D300 sold their D200 at a price that was reasonable then everyone would still benefit. But the rush to be the first on the block made everyone crazy. No reason to sell D200's with hardly any use on them for under 1,000 (e.g. 850!!) You would have benefited even if you had to pay 1100 to 1200 for a low use D200. But that's the craziness of an open market.

dgh3 Registered since 28th Jan 2007Wed 28-Nov-07 07:17 PMI don't want to say "I told you so." But, I will. I sold my D200 within just a few days of the D300 announcement, well before it was public beyond Nikonians. I got $1200 for one with 46,000 shots on it. Some told me I was overreacting, and that it didn't make sense to do that. Hmmmmm??? Wonder what they are saying now??
BTW,if you think people are irrational in selling so cheap, then just go long in D200's - buy a couple of dozen and then make a huge profit 6-7 months from now by selling them later, when everyone is hating their D300's because they have "banding" or have bad AF, or whatever imaginary ill they think they have, and regret getting rid of their D200 for a song.
Also, immediately on the D3 announcement, I started buying Ai and Ais lenses. They're already doubling in price. But, I'm not going to be buying any D200's - no matter how cheap, too risky for me.

That said, it's not like we wouldn't *like* to get 300's, but you're all right, why dump perfectly good D200's at a loss and owe another grand for a camera we don't need (just want)? Maybe when they announce the D300s... IF we can hold out that long.
But for you guys who are taking the plunge, go for it, enjoy the cameras and let the rest of us know how they're working. We'll be anxious to hear.

romillard,
Well I can understand your frustration especially since I own a D80 and a D300. D80's are like D70's now. I knew I should have sold sooner, but I couldn't live without a camera!! But I would disagree with you that a D200 would sell for $1200 and that would be a win win situation. I think people would continue to wait until you or anybody else lowered the price. The guy that sold for $850 was probably afraid the market would be flooded with D200's so he got rid of his quickly.
Maybe if you sold it several months ago like someone else did. At $1200 that would have been unusual so obviously it sold because it seemed like a bargain. Once the D300 hit the shelves everyone knew the D200 prices would drop. I was planning on getting a D200 when this occured but got lucky with a D300, plus I knew I would have regreted skipping the D300. Don't feel too bad. D2X's are dropping rapidly too. People who spent almost $5000 for D2X now see a $1799 camera that is just as good or better so who really feels bad!

I think it's simply that people are pleased to be able to use classic lenses (apparently with surprisingly good results) on a digital body that gives them the same angle of view they are used to with film. In other words, it's because the D3 is FX format

Having had the D200; I have had to learn to use much better technique upgrading from a D100 (which I still have), learned how to shoot in manual mode, learned how to shoot high speed auto racing & panning and much more. Lots of the things I learned I could not have done with my D100 quite as well due to buffer limitations, AF speed etc. Could I have learned as much and got better at these things with my D100? Yes, but having the D200 and the higher fps, large buffer, better resolution.... allowed me to get better that much faster. It was worth that dollar a day to me.
I am pretty good at rationalizing things. Now I need to continue my photographic progress with my D300 so when I upgrade in two years to the next generation camera, I can convince myself that the experience and knowledge gained having use of a D300 will have been worth a dollar a day. I don't think I will have any problem....

I am still learning so much with my D80 that I feel I need to get better behind the lens before I put a new body before my eye. It is not the camera body that makes the good shot, it is the person operating it. And I want to invest in myself first. That is why my next big purchase will be ANPAT 8. I figure that I will upgrade my knowledge and photographic opportunities at the same time that way.

PS,
on the AI and AIS lenses being more attractive because the FX sensor I slightly disagree, me, as many other I know in the real world and the e-world, like the 1.5 crop of the DX sensor. Now with FX you are force to buy new lenses to achieve wide and super angle (12-24mm and 17-55mm no good for FX)and the big teles now have less reach..
And it wouldnt be smart buy a FX camera to use the DX mode with about 5mp..:/
anyways, that's MHO.

I have been shooting with a D70s, had passed on the D80 after hearing that the D300 was coming out. I had fallen in love figured that I would hold out till after Xmas when the D200's price dropped.
I was AMAZED to find the same week the D300 shipped I was able to get a LNIB D200 with under 6000 clicks for a measley $900 bucks!!!
So I'm not complaining, I got my dream camera (and some dream lenses - thanks Nikonians!!!)

Ultimately I think it's the question of why most people don't want to keep a spare body around for what seems an attractive price to me, just half of what a new D300 costs at the moment.
The answer to that, I believe, lies in the large number of remarkably low-usage D200s for sale. It makes me wonder why so many people buy what is really an expensive (just my opinion), heavy, and very rugged camera body for what seems to me to be occasional shooting. Also, I note a large impact of cosmetics on resale price. Do most people with this class of Nikon have a spare body?

#35. "RE: D200 Bone Yard" | In response to Reply # 34
Hey Crabby Guy.
I didn't dump any of my 4 bodies at least not yet. And yes I would say a very large majority have at least 2 bodies. I have 2 D200's and gave 1 to Mrs. Berg with her 18-200vr attached, and she loves it. I kept the other D200 to carry around in my truck so I always have one to grab for that unexpected moment. Will use it more to photograph clients homes where we are building custom cabinetry. I am keeping the D2Xs for all my long telephoto lens's with its 2X crop. And a new D300 for the everyday camera for the rest of my good glass.
So yes they all depreciated the day I bought them but I do not really lose big time until they get sold. It is oh so nice to grab a body with a dedicated favorite lens attached.

avincent52 Registered since 04th Dec 2007Wed 05-Dec-07 07:35 AMGiven the fact that the D300 seems to be readily available, it's a buyer's market for used D200s.
I bought a superclean, 3,400 click D200 for under $900 (once you subtract the card and cardreader, the shipping, and the paypal fees.)
A recent D300 buyer suggested that a D300 would hold its value better than a used D200.
Do the math. My D200 dropped about $600 in 18 months, I imagine that the D300 will experience a similar drop when the Next Big Thing is released. That means that my D200 would have to drop to below $300.
While it will happen eventually, I expect that it'll take more than a couple of years.
Me, I'm a happy camper, upgrading from a point and shoot to something that will take my old AI glass digital. Now if we can just have a similar run of obsolete, hardly-worth-recycling D3s...

dgh3 Registered since 28th Jan 2007Wed 05-Dec-07 09:21 AMNo way does a new item hold better value than a used one, at least it would be very uncommon for that to be true. This is because so much depreciation occurs when the item goes from new to used, right after it is bought. There's a tremendous hit there. Also, with camera bodies, the used item has already taken its knocks - that is many people desperate to sell are the ones who always want the latest and the greatest- not necessarily just something that works very, very well. In contrast, those in the used market seek value, they want what works and not necessarily the latest/greatest. Thus, so long as the used items continues to perform well, they have little need to sell it. I sold my D200 in anticipation of two things: getting a new camera within the next year, and the upcoming price blood bath that I wanted to jump ahead of.
What I see is that there is growing market to sell used D200 accessories, lenses, etc. to the now growing group of savvy used D200 buyers.

But, because I decided to wait for the upcoming (soon, I hope) 20+ MegaPixel version of the D3, I needed a better long-term camera; I wanted i-TTL and screw drive lenses so I sent the D40X back to Roberts (a FANTASTIC SELLER) who gave me back a D80. And, it's pictures are similar to the D40X's (which is to say, outstanding...) and are so much better than the D200's that it makes me mad to go back and look at the best of my 46,000 shots taken with it. The D80 is just that much better, I can actually take very nice ISO 1600 pictures - just over expose 1-2 EV and the shadow noise disappears without overexposing too much. So, why would used D200's go for more than used D40X's and D80's, after allowing for, of course, screwdrive, better weather sealing, faster fps, and better backward compatibility with Ai and Ai-s lenses, etc?
