Iv'e been patiently waiting for my camera for the past three weeks now. I am #7 on the list and I haven't moved one notch. Two bodies arrived yesterday but Nikon assigned them to the NPS clients. This is totally ridiculous and I am about ready to camp in front of the store like people do when and Apple item is announced. Just kidding! Hopefully, I will get mine next week and I will be wondering why I sank $3k in this camera with a very big smile. I would like to hear your comments. Do you feel the same way or is it me with just a serious but enjoyable NAS problem?

It's a strange world we live in. People are reacting to a new camera from Nikon like it's an iPhone. I'm sure you have a lovely camera right now. Go make gorgeous pictures with it The D800, D400, and all other cameras will be along in due course.
I was lucky to get my D800 very early. But had I not got it, I'd be out shooting my other cameras and not really worrying about it. I'll be ordering a D400 when it's announced. I hope it comes in time for football season. If not, I'll be relegated to my D3s...

I suspect for the professionals this is all silly, it's just a new tool. For those who do this for fun, it's like a new boat, or a new car, or a new TV -- no rational reason we are excited, it's just fun to have new things. It doesn't change my world in any way; one only need to look at how excited my wife was ("Looks just like the old one" was the extent of her interest).
For me personally I went a bit far looking for my D800 because, in addition to wanting the new thing, I had a (rare) vacation coming up at the end of April, during which my (only) niece was getting married. I wanted a new camera for both events, so it was worth the trouble to drive a bit to find a Best Buy that had them, rather than risking B&H would not ship in reasonable time.
As it turned out I think I got lucky two ways, not only found one, but I suspect my B&H order (placed 2-3 weeks after announcement) would ship a LOT later.
If the $3K is, on the other hand, life changing, think of it as a cooling off period and opportunity to decide if you have legitimate buyer's remorse. For me it was worth it, as I will earn infinitely more money with it than the prior (or exactly the same, or infinitely less depending on how you divide zero by zero). For others that same math of zero ROI may argue otherwise. For a professional, they would need to decide if it somehow pays for itself plus some profit.

I ordered mine about 4 weeks ago and was told I should have it in 4-6 weeks. I rang today for an update and was told there was 200 waiting before me and another 200 behind me. Not expecting to have it anytime some... poop...

Lucky you! You guys down in the states have the camera at Best Buy! We here in Canada barely got any in specialty stores with huge queues to fill. I wouldn't care too much but my D90 keeps having focusing issues and I would really want to have a new camera - just this past weekend I was in a model portrait workshop and bunch of my photos turned out to be out of focus So, yes, I am impatiently waiting for my own D800!

Thank folks. I truly enjoyed your comments and your humor. In the meantime I made good use of my D700 yesterday shooting a family baptism. But I can't hardly wait to get my hands on my new toy while my wife says, oh...another one for the collection.

This year (and this year only) I have an answer to "Looks just like the old one" and "Another one for the collection," I just have to mention her new red car in the driveway. "Still only got 4 wheels I see."

I just got home from picking up my new D4 from my dealer. I got some "intel" for you D800 Wannabes. Nikon is shipping out hundreds or maybe even thousands of D800's from Los Angeles Thursday (April 19th) to dealers nationwide. I was told to expect my D800 this time next week!
So, there is hope on the horizon!
Now, I am going to go enjoy my D4 for now. Maybe a trip to Ding Darling NWR is in order for this weekend!

Mr Becker. I am to say that I am a proud owner of a D800 however; I decided not to send you any pictures since you were so aggravated with this type of thread. Keep them coming guys. We really want to hear from those of you that have received as well as the ones waiting for their D800 and pray for Mr Becker to finally get his.

I pre-ordered from Amazon on Feb 7 and still no word. I also ordered the MB-D12 grip that was backordered and just got an email today from Amazon saying it will arrive Tuesday next week. Hoping that there were some D800's in the shipment from Nikon...
