What glass do you do you currently use for your D800/800E and do you plan to buy any new lenses? Thanks.

I plan on using the following glass assuming my D800e ever gets here. I suppose I have to be patient since I didn't order until late April. Hopefully my camera will arrive before August.

Here's my lens lineup:

17-35mm F/2.8 AFS
80-200mm F/2.8 AFD
24mm F/3.5 PC-E
35mm F/2 Zeiss
58mm F/1.4 Voightlander
85mm F/1.8 PC
300mm F/4 AFS

20mm F/2.8 AIS
35mm F/2 AIS
50mm F/1.8 AIS
85mm F/2 AIS
The AIS lenses were a gift and are regretfully seldom used since I switched to digital from the FE2 I used to shoot. Perhaps the FX sensor will enable me to get more use out of these old beauties.

Wanted: something similar to the new Zeiss 15mm with a sub $1000 price tag.

St Petersburg, RU

I am pretty well set but would be interested in exploring macro.
Current lenses shared between a D7000 and D800
70-200vr1
24-70 2.8
85 1.4D
50 1.4 Sigma
35 1.8
24 1.4
17-55 2.8 (which never got much use so will likely be turned into cash)
10-24
10-20 3.5 Sigma
18-105vr

Would like to experiment with a 135 DC on the D800
I have tested all these lenses on the D800 and all gave better results than on the D90 or D7000.

I primarily use the Nikkor "holy trinity:"

14-24mm f/2.8
24-70mm f/2.8
70-200mm VR f/2.8

And also have:

Nikkor 85mm f/1.4 AF-D
Tamron 180mm f/3.5 Macro
Zeiss 100mm f/2.0 Planar

I just recently pared down the number of lenses I own to a minimum that I actually use most frequently. Whether or not I get any others in the future will depend, of course, on finances; but also on if the above prove to be unsuitable. I would like to get a 24mm f/1.4 and a 50mm f/1.4 at some point, but I have no immediate plans to do so.

I'm keeping things simple because I don't want to carry a lot:
24-70mm f2.8 (bought new with the camera)
70-200mm f2.8 VR1

I might buy the 85mm f1.8G.

+1

I also like primes. My D800E came in two days ago. WOW !!! I have two thirds of the new "prime trinity" but lack the 35mm/ 1.4G. The 85mm and 24mm/1.4G are spectacular with D800E. Better than I anticipated. I consider the 35mm/1.4G to be excellent for street photography or portrait glass. That will be my next lens.

What I also like is that G glass works seamlessly with the D800E, so I am not going with the outstanding Zeiss. I appreciate the lens integration built into the Command Dial (to change the Aperture) of camera with Nikon G glass. To me that is a plus.

You do know that the most current ZF.2 lenses have the ability of controlling the aperture in the command dial. The only feature you sacrifice using the Zeiss lenses is autofocus.

Thank you. I did not know that about the most current Zeiss lenses. Nevertheless, I am going to stick with Nikon G glass. For me, I appreciate the integration of one system although I am certain Zeiss glass is exceptional.

Truth be told, I am spoiled. Having used Leica ranger finders for years with film cameras (Leica M6 TTL), I am once again spoiled by Nikon technology and appreciate the auto-focusing capability of the NIkons. In Leicaland that statement would have been blasphemy, punishable by taking pictures for 1 year with an iPhone.

If I ever decide that I want to carry weight around, then I may ultimately succumb to the 70-200mm. But for me, my next lens is the 35mm/1.4g. All the best.

I can never get wide enough!

Hence my choice of the NEW version Sigma 12-24 which is much better than the old version. No other lens gets you to 12mm (122 deg. FOV) in a rectilinear format. Made a choice of the 24-120 instead of the 24-70 because of 1)VR 2)More versatile with extra reach. As the primary lens on the camera my own personal choice was that having the right focal length and VR was more important more of the time than absolute pixel peeper image quality and greater isolation offered by the the 24-70. I would use an f/1.4 prime for better isolation anyway. With the 24-120, I leave the 1.7x on the 70-200 to match the range giving me a 119-340 f/4.8 lens. FYI, the Tokina fisheye zoom while designed for DX does fill the FX frame zoomed in just a little bit from maximum - wider than the Nikon 16mm fisheye by a bit (photo attached). And finally, with the D800's AF capability to f/8 the 200-400 does indeed work quite well with the 2x (AF and IQ) - IF you have the version III TC.

FX Lenses:
Sigma 12-24mm DG HSM II f/4.5-5.6
Nikon 24-120mm AF-S FX f/4G ED VR-II 77mm
Nikon 50mm f/1.4D 52mm
Nikon 70-200mm AF-S f/2.8G ED VRII 77mm
Nikon 70-300mm AF-S f/4.5-5.6G ED VR 67mm
Nikon 200-400mm AF f/4 ED VR

OtherLenses:
Tokina 10-17mm f3.5-4.5 fisheye (AT-X 107AF DX)

Teleconverters:
Nikon TC-14E
Nikno TC-17EII
Nikon TC-20EIII

I rarely use my Zoom Lenses on the D800 (AF-S 17-35mm/f2.8 and AF-S 80-200mm/f2.8). For wide-angle shots I only use the Zeiss ZF.2 lenses, because of their optical performance. On a longer focal length I prefer to use an AF.

Distagon 21mm/f2.8
Distagon 35mm/f1.4
Nikkor AF 50mm/1.4D
Nikkor AF-S 85mm/1.4G
Nikkor AF-DC 105mm/f2D

The next Lenses I would like to get are the Distagon 25mm/f2, the Distagon 15mm/f2.8 and the Nikkor AF-S 200mm/f2.

ASAP will be a Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 then a Nikon 16mm f/2.8 fisheye. Yeh I know...."a fisheye" but I'm into 360 Spherical Panoramas. In time Nikon 28-300mm

I'm ok with my present Nikon AFS 24-70mm f/2.8, Nikon AFS 7-200mm f/2.8, Micro Nikkor AFS 105mm f/2.8.

I will also try out of my many manual focus lenses: Nikon 8mm f/2.8 Circular Fisheye, Nikon PC 28mm f/3.5, Nikon AI 50mm f/1.4, Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/2.8, Nikon AI 400mm f/3.5, Nikon Reflex 500mm f/8 and Nikon Reflex 1000mm f/11

I'm a Canon convert and I had to sell everything Canon to come up with the cash needed to fund the D800. I managed to scrap enough extra to buy a 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S Nikkor Zoom. That will be it for awhile a long while. BTW ordered my D800 on 05/29/12 received on 06/05/12

So nice to be back in FX land!

I have used so far:
17-35mm F/2.8 AFS - Fantastic on this body
80-200mm F/2.8 AFD
85mm F1.8G (love this lens!)

Still to try: 8 other lenses. Not using my DX glass, as I have not had to time to yet.

Plan to buy? I don't really have anything (non DX) in the 50mm range and I am finding I need something between the 17-35 and the 85. Also, none of my non-DX are VR.

I am "monitoring" this site and this thread to narrow the search.

There is rumored to be a couple new "cheap" FX lens coming out soon.
24-85 and 24-70.
I am still waiting for the AF-S Nikkor 80-400 that is not even rumored anymore.

If I interpret the rumour mill correctly, ONE of those two lenses may appear in the near future. Both rumours seem to have originated from the same patent application.

I have a D800E on order and plan on using the 24 f/1.4G, 50 f/1.4G, 85 PC-E f/2.8D, and Zeiss Makro-Planar T* 2/100. I have only seen a few images of the new product from Zeiss, the Distagon T* 2.8/15 but will most likely be interested in purchasing it if images with the D800E are as good as noted.

You can't go wrong with the 15mm Zeiss lens There's nothing else that comes close to the optical and mechanical quality of this lens. The same thing with the 21mm lens. Unfortunately the first 15mm lenses are already sold out. So it might take a couple of month until they will be available again.

Here's a link of a landscape photographer who used it:

Edit: Heres also a quote from Strand about the Nikon D800E:

Hi Guido,

Thanks for the direction to Strand and his comments and image re the 15 mm Zeiss. I am afraid my wallet is going to take a hit on this one as it looks like the 15 mm Zeiss is exactly what I have been looking for in a wide angle lens.
