I use Lightroom 4 to process my D700 files. There is a slightly annoying delay every time I hit the right arrow to go to the next file to develop, i.e., it takes the machine a while to load each image before I can do anything. Apparently, the program loads each image from the hard disk when you point to it to move into the development of the file. It only takes a few seconds, but if you shoot 2,000 frames over a weekend it adds up.

Has anyone switching from a D700 to a D800 noticed this delay going up? Even if the delay goes up I'm hoping that 3x the pixels doesn't mean 3x the delay.

Probably more RAM, large cache (set in preferences) and make your jpg previews small.
Then also go ahead and optimize the library (Under File I believe).

If you aren't on 4.0RC1, and if you use two monitors, upgrade. RC1 made a HUGE difference in the speed of develop mode with a secondary monitor. You might want to try upgrading anyway, I think it fixed more than it broke (it did break some things, for example the sharpening does not display when moving OTHER sliders, e.g. it goes un-sharp while moving another slider, then a bit later it comes back).

Oh... and more RAM and more CPU and faster disks. If you wish, keep the same mouse, but otherwise thank your D800 for buying you a new Computer.

Didn't surprise me. If my boss, and my other boss, both allow me to get out, I easily hit 1000 just doing amateurish stuff. Now that turns into about 10-50 saved (sometimes zero). I cull a lot. But to cull you need to get them through the preview build, which takes quite some time.

2000 frames at D800 NEF size is what -- 100 Gigabytes or so?

Invest in disk drives, memory, and similar manufacturer stock.

Yes. I shoot charity events with thousands of participants, and the organization wants its volunteer photographers to get a shot of as many participants as possible. When people have a great shot of themselves running, riding, or doing something else to raise money for a great cause they end up putting them up in their offices, using them as screen savers, or using the pictures in some other way that ends up getting publicity for the organization and the event. Ergo, I give my trigger finger a serious workout at the events--anything to get people to want to come back next year, or get their friends want to join in next time!

When I have a lot of images in a folder I'll actually go to the library menu and select the render images option. That builds up the image cache for everything in the folder all at one time. Comes in handy.
