"Hallelujah . . . B&H *finally* charged my card!"

Indianapolis, US

No official email notice yet, but B&H put the charge
through for my D800 today. My order status on their website
shows, "In stock, order sent to warehouse." I was
HOPING they had shipped it today (Thu) so I'd get it before
the weekend -- but I'm just happy to know it's actually on its
way. (I got my order in about 6:30am EST on opening day.)

Congrats on getting your D800. You're gonna love it! Oh, the definition. The blades - of - grass!! You want to reach out and touch them. Let us know which lenses you use on this magnificent camera, and how you like them.

I gave up on B&H. I got my D800 2 weeks ago from Ritz Camera.

I pre-ordered at B&H, where I shopped for years, on 2/7, the first day, at 9:30 AM EST. After months of 1 - no action and 2 - no feedback from the store other than "We have no idea when" type of emails, I got fed up and looked elswhere. I'd heard that some folks were getting theirs through Ritz Camera, so I looked up the nearest store, strolled in and placed an order. Two weeks later, it shipped. Done. Delivered. Plus, the folks at Ritz are terrific, very helpful, very friendly, none of the B&H secrecy treatment for paying customers.

The reason they're getting units is that USA laws on fairness of ditribution of hard to get imported goods dictate that all stores, big and small, must get equal shares of a shipment. Thom Hogan points this out. The Ritz Camera outlet, although part of a chain, is a small local store and thus got my D800 wayyy faster than B&H could.

Yesterday, May 9, I cancelled my B&H pre-order, and asked how far they'd gotten on the list. The rep said there were still a couple hundred ahead of me. Your pre-order was 6:30 AM, mine was 9:30 AM. That's probably a month's difference in delivery -- and we're both high up on the list of the first day! A rep also told me that by Friday morning, the 3rd day of B&H pre-orders, their list was nearly 4,000 long. I was in the store at that time, and he said this with arched brows, a deep breath and dropped jaw. He'd never seen the like of it.

For any of you who ordered at B&H anytime after the first day of 2/7, you might want to try a local store. You're in for a long wait at B&H. Buying locally very much pays off in this case. And I must say, I was impressed with Ritz Camera. I will buy there again.

Again, cheers on your great new camera!! Best wishes, Tom B

I ordered from Best Buy yesterday and will pick it up at the store Sunday morning 10:00.
Target is also selling them from their web site but current out. The salesgirl at Best Buy went far beyond expectations, and hunted for one throughout their system until she found one which the store manager would OK a store to store transfer.
None of the regular camera stores locally gave me anything but a little suppressed laugh when asking about getting one before the 15th when I head to England and Scotland and eventually back to St Petersburg Russia.
So, be active and search even if a store says there is a long line, they might not have a long line in 24 hours later.
Better to visit stores than calling them. Chat with a sales person or manager, so you are a person to them, not just a anonymous phone caller. Actually in short order lined up two so they ARE out there.

Best Buy came through for me too. I had preorders at 3 different vendors, all telling me I had about 3 months to wait. I called Best Buy last Friday and they said to call this past Monday to see if a purchase order with Nikon when through. Monday morning found one D800 in a NY distribution center which hit my hands on Wednesday afternoon.

For anyone trying Best Buy, you need to find a sales person willing to go the extra distance. It took three stores and phone calls before I found someone who knew what they were talking about and hunted for one. Everyone else just told me it's sold out.

Yes, B&H disappointed a lot of people with their handling of this situation, including me. I also have a D4 on order thru B&H and lord only knows when my name will rise to the top of that list... Lessons learned for the next product cycle, I suppose.

I bit the bullet and rented a D800 from LensRental.com to shoot an event in SC. I ship back today after two weeks of use, so I have some hands-on experience with this camera. The IQ with my 24-70 and 70-200 lenses is really stunning, though I've learned that camera-shake is a definite factor when shooting at 36mp. It's nice to know my own new D800 will be here soon.

When did you place the order?

I ordered mine around 6:30a EST on Feb 7th. They still haven't sent me an email notice, though they charged my Amex yesterday. I called and paid another $45 for Overnight Sat delivery (on top of the $36 I originally paid for 'overnight'.) I cancelled my D4 order and requested a refund for the $499 extended warranty they charged me for in Feb--and delivered to me overnight at an add'l cost of $29 because it was part of my original D4 order that specified overnight shipping. My dissatisfaction with B&H is mounting considerably...

Greg,

Thanks for the reply. I learned something from Adorama a while back about extended warranties, they will allow you to purchase them up to 30 days after the purchase. So I generally hold off at least until I receive the item, for what that is worth. Enjoy your new camera, looks like I am about a month and a half behind you.

My B&H order confirmation email was received at 2/7/12 at 6:24 AM EST. No email yet, website still says backordered, and CC not charged. Hopefully my order will get processed soon as well!

Enjoy the new camera!

Steve

I never did receive any formal email notice from B&H. I noticed my card had been charged and logged into their site to find my order status had changed -- then called and upgraded my shipping to Sat delivery so I wouldn't have to wait 'til Monday.

I've been doing some informal shooting over the weekend and really I love it! Luckily, it doesn't appear to suffer from the left auto-focus problems reported elsewhere. Some others have complained about the ergonomics but they seem much improved from my POV. I had the grip awaiting it, as well as a new strap and hoodman eye cup, so I'm all set for my wedding shoot on Memorial Day weekend. And I have time to get fully acclimated with it beforehand.

Congrats!! I waited, initially, for the 800 starting 2 years ago. It took longer to develop than expected. And now that it is here, I have my order in and am hoping it arrives before a wedding on 6/2/12. If Adorama is shortly behind B&H, I could feel the same way soon. Good Luck!
