"D800 loupe, 100% image size is where?"

Laguna Beach, US

The D800 LCD display will magnify 11 times using the zoom button. It will zoom 5 times to check focus in Live View. Where is 100% image size on both of these? Anyone know? It would be very helpful to check your focus.
Thanks in advance.

I think 100% is the 4th click.
I've had the Hoodman and now use a CaVision loope.
It is a magnifying lens that fits the camera more securely.

Thank you. I configured the center button to auto zoom full and that is 10 zoom clicks, with one left to go further.
That 10 click magnification matches the 5 full clicks on Live View. Too bad the manual doesn't specify.

That video also raises some serious questions about using LV for critical manual focusing.

Ok, if that video is to be accurate, then 100% in regular review is 9 clicks, 200% is 10 clicks and maybe 300% is 11 clicks or total zoom.
He says 4 clicks in LV is 100% and 5 or total is 200%.
So....9 clicks of zoom equals 100% of the original image in image revue.
4 clicks of Zoom equals 100% of the original image in Live View.
I have set the center button to 200% on both zooms. If it shows sharp at 200%, that's pretty sharp.
Thanks all.

Update: According to new information from Marianne Oelund (who is a tech whiz) over on dpreview.com,
the maximum zoom on regular review is actually 400%, not 300%. All the rest above is accurate.

Scott - how sure are you that 9 clicks is 100%? Marianne doesn't say where she got the information from (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/post/41457202) and Thom Hogan's book says 8 clicks is 100% approx.

With regular LCD review...
The maximum zoom is 400% (11 clicks)
the next one down is 200% (10 clicks and HIGH setting)
the third one from maximum is 100% (9 clicks and MEDIUM setting)
I do not know what LOW setting % is. Maybe 50%

Nikon software uses same increments.

I will tell you that being able to set the control button to zoom 100% quickly after a shot is a great way to check focus. 100% sharp is my goal. Not sure what Thom said or where you read it, but I certainly would defer to him. I have his D800 manual and it is full of great information. Setting the same button for LV zoom focus is also a nice feature to use.

Set the default button and you will love it.

Thom's book ('Complete Guide to the Nikon D800 and D800E') says there are 10 zoom clicks available on the multi selector and 8 clicks gives 100% magnification, which is the Medium setting in the f2 menu. More details here http://www.nikonians.org/forums/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=430&topic_id=20192&mesg_id=20192&page=

I do use Medium in f2 and it's very useful - I'd just like to be certain that it's 100%. Darrell Young's book (according to another Nikonian) says that Medium is 200%.

Not sure how many clicks there are total, but I agree that full zoom is 400%, full minus 1 click is 200%, and full minus 2 clicks is 100% = MEDIUM and I have the center button on the multi-selector set to that (medium).

Nikon view software is 400%, 200%, 100%
Lcd view loupe is the same.

Medium setting is 100%
High is 200%

400% is not really usable IMO.
If you get sharp at 200%, you have a GREAT shot. Really sharp.

Yes, 400% (11th click) is pretty useless - it's so far in it's difficult to tell whether you're looking at image detail or the monitor's pixel rows.

Thanks for the info guys.

Real world question - isn't 50% a better way to judge than 100%? I've been using medium, so I guess that is 100%.

Would 50% be low?

Best regards, SteveK

With the resolution of this camera, 50% size, tack sharp should be fine for most.
I started with high (200%), now very content with medium. (100%) Used it since this old thread was begun.
Wonder why Nikon didn't see fit to include the real sizes in the manual?
yes, 50% is low setting.
