"D800 strap"

Best, NL

I do not have a D700 or Dx (anymore), but the strap supplied with the D800 seems not to fit such a high-end camera. It is very thin and flimsy, print is very thin too.
My D300 (and D100) were supplied with far better/nicer straps.
What do you think?

Hans

Happy with my new D800!

...or one of the incomparable Black Rapids if you want to put the load on your shoulder versus your neck. I use two of them on my two bodies, and with arthritis everywhere, couldn't be happier about the way they work. (No, I don't own stock!)

I'm like Alan old arthritis but I like the Carry Speed strap. The over the shoulder deals are more much easier on the body and you look so cool.

I agree with the Carry Speed Strap. I used two Black Rapid straps since they were introduced. My local dealer showed me the Carry Speed and it turns out to be more comfortable. It is especially nice when carrying two camera bodies with long glass at the same time. I also like having the option of the safety strap for the body along with the primary strap attached to the lens.

Hans,
I never use the strap included with the camera - it just brings unwanted notice to your camera type and with the D800 that is not a very good idea for security reasons.

I have just purchased the Spider Holster and initially I am very impressed. See link below...

I just looked at the straps mentioned here by everyone - pretty cool accessories. However I'm not sure if they really work with L-brackets attached to the camera. I keep one attached to mine now and am planning on keeping one with D800 when I get that.

I would appreciate any advice on this subject as well!

I cannot speak for any of the strap items but here is the D700 with the L Plate attached being carried on the Spider Holster.......

And here is the same camera quickly removed from the Spider and mounted on a ball head using that attached L Plate.
Notice the Spider cleat (the stainless ball just to the left of the quick release mount) and the ball does not hinder the quick mounting to a tripod in any way..........

I use the Black rapid straps and could not be happier. I've been out with my D300, MBD10 and 70-200Vr and its quite a load. The strap makes all the difference in the world. Recently I had it on all day at Disney. After 8 hours walking, i had no or minimal pain in my shoulder or neck.

Thank you all for your responses!
Looks like my strap has to make place for an other solution

Black Rapid strap: RS-7 would probably the one to go for. Does anybody using this one has experienced damage to the camera because of the "bumping" metal clip Is anybody using it with the BRAD extension?

Carry Speed CS-Pro: Saw some negative review of camera damage due to the plate not fitting correctly. Any experience? In one of the clips I saw a plate with a pin that could be turned away, so the camera could be flat on a table, without the pin lifting the camera. I do not see that in any of the pictures on their website.

Spider holster: Nice for weddings etc. What about a city tour? Underneath your jacket or coat? The other two solutions could be worn on top of.

Appreciate the comments and/or suggestions!

I have three RS-7 straps for all my bodies - one D700 and two Pentax (yes, I said the "P" word). I devised the BRAD strap with a left over CamelBak chest strap and it helps keep the strap in place so I do recommend the BRAD strap - especially if you get a Joey pocket for a phone or batteries or whatever, as the weight of the Joey will pull the strap forward - causing it to slide down your chest. And also if you plan to do any adventure sport photography that might require anything other than an upright camera position, as the strap can fall off your body without a BRAD strap.

I've experienced absolutely NO damage to ANY of my cameras. You do, of course, have to exercise some caution. I make sure my lens is pointing backwards when at my side, as that keeps the bouncing and bumping to a minimum.

I also bought the Manfrotto quick release adaptor and it's great. If I don't feel like switching my plate and regular attachment, I just use a keychain ring on the camera strap lugs and attach the R Strap clip to that - and keep my QR on the bottom of the camera. Works fine. I'll also use that setup to tether the camera body to the R Strap for extra security.

The Sun Sniper is the same concept as the R Strap, but certain Sun Sniper models - it escapes me which one(s) - have a thin metal cable stitched into it so no one can run up, cut your strap, and steal your camera. This is a nice feature for urban shooters on photo walks in less than desirable areas. Just sayin'.

My only concern/complaint with the R Strap is that the underside of the shoulder strap is not "grippy" enough. I do like the idea of the Carry Speed being made of Neoprene and with a rubbery underside. Even with the BRAD strap on my RS7, the shoulder strap seems to slide up & down a little too much sometimes. But then again - I'm anal and like everything "just so." I plan to remedy this by adhering a rubber strip to the underside.

I shoot everything from urban portrait to mountain bike races - ALL my gear goes through the ringer - and never any problems with my trusty R Straps. If/when one ever gives out, I'll probably experiment with a Carry Speed, but for now - I do 'endorse' the R Strap.

Good luck!

Here are some pictures of the Carry Speed. With the bracket installed you can still mount on a tripod at any time. Biggest problem I have with the D800 is the cheap a%$ neck strap. I want one as good as my D200 strap was. Pardon my cheap 50mm zoom lens

Hahaha, I was thinking of putting my 6 year old D200 strap on my D800, after being beat up for all those years the yellow is not yellow anymore but the strap still feels way better then the new D800 strap

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see anyone mention the reason I don't use the straps provided with my Nikons: I don't like to advertise how much I have ($$$) hanging around my neck. Anyone can read from those straps from halfway across the park/stadium/cruiseship/... that I've got the latest Nikon dSLR around your neck and I'd hate to run into the guy who feels he should have it more than me.

Maybe I'm paranoid, but I certainly notice what others are shooting with and my insurance (or ego) doesn't need them to know what I'm shooting with unless they want to get close enough to read the label on the front of the body.

I go with plain black straps with quick releases (OP/TECH USA Super Classic Strap-Pro Loop). Nothing fancy, but comfortable, cheap and durable.

I leave mine in the original cellophane wrapper.
The next owner gets much of the stuff in the box like that.

You could use yours on your CoolPix.

I have the same concern at times, though moreso for cases. My 200-400 Nikon case has a big gold "Nikon" on it. I would really rather it said nothing, for those times it is sitting in a car and people might look through the window. I considered getting a stick on cloth label that said "Hazard: Medical Specimens".

That probably won't work for a neck strap though.

I think that's a great idea! I'm sure Nikon is looking for the free advertising but I'd rather my equipment and bags were a bit more nondescript.

I can't speak to anything but the original straps...they leave a lot to be desired.

I just purchased the Black Rapids RS-7 and buckle protector...took a vacation to Florida...spent 8 plus hours a day walking around Florida with my D700 and 24-70 hanging across my body versus off of my shoulder or around my neck.

There is no comparison between the original Nikon strap and the RS-7. It is nice...no fatigue at all with the cross shoulder mount. Camera stays on your hip...ready for a quick grab, and then back on your hip out of the way.

I had a wedding to shoot as soon as I got back from vacation. The RS-7 let me take a shot...drop the camera to my hip...do business...like moving the props...adjusting lights, etc. without any concern for the camera body.

I've had the original Nikon strap slip off of my shoulder so many times and even though it would ride on my hip, I had to keep my arm back so that it would stay in place.

I'm not selling the RS-7 as the end all to camera straps.experience experince with mine.

I'm sure there are comparables out there...and I sure recommend one of the sling type straps over the lame originals.

Mine will not come off of my camera...well, unless I need to use it on a tripod.

I must be a strap Luddite. No upside-down straps, hip straps, sling straps, etc. for me. I use UpStraps on all my cameras. Camera won't slide off my shoulder, and I can hang it around my neck if I want. I've been switching to the new XxX version, a little wider and bumps on only one side. Works great for me, but my D800 has only a simple Kirk camera plate. Those who have L-plates or who need their cameras to dangle in a particular way seem happier with one of the fancier models.

/OT: Nikon's straps always remain in their original wrapping, along with the USB cable, AV cable, manual, CD, and plastic LCD protector (if provided.) Makes a nicer unboxing experience for the next owner. I sold my D7000, P7100, and D70 IR today at a photo show, and the buyers were ecstatic at the pristine condition of the accessories. /OT

I've tried a number of straps, no neck straps however since the neck is not suited for lateral loads(although they deal with on-axis vertical loads quite nicely). My need was for weigh being away from my neck, fast access for long sessions and security. I rejected all the fixed position mounts because none are fast and most hang in a position where slipping a right hand into the hand strap is not a smooth instant function. I use a RS-5 Black Rapid because it satisfies the need for fast access in events, the camera is in the perfect position and orientation to slip my hand into the hand strap and bring the camera, grip, 70-200 and SB900 up to shooting level in one smooth motion without looking at it.
The Spider system looks interesting but the camera resting position prevents the fast access the sling straps provide. The fixed position rigid mounts of say the Carry system looks like a great way to carry a camera for a long distance on broken trails but not to get to the camera and use it intermittently hundreds of times in an event or when a creature pops up off the trail. Everyone has different needs and for me, shooting hundred or a thousand shots in a 6-8 hour event I have not found anything that is as convenient or as comfortable as the RS-5. The little pockets are a great and frequently used feature.

Safety from theft. I deal with thousands of tourists each summer here in St Petersburg and many bring their cameras. I tell them, if they fear a theft, to lengthen their strap and put it over their head, not handing from a shoulder. A camera theft is usually a crime of opportunity where it is a low value target and only gone after if the risk is low. A low risk target is a tourist who is distracted and gawking, with a purse or camera hanging on the same side shoulder. That who is more likely to be the victim of a opportunity thief who are usually running by and grabbing something. This is a pretty low street crime city however, but in places with more tourists like Rome or Venice, which see 10 times as many tourists in the summer, pro pickpockets work by the season and travel between countries with the season. Cameras are usually low priority because there is no easy way to get rid of them, they want cash and credit cards, both of which are converted within 10 minutes to more cash.
When traveling however, I am a little more apprehensive about showing anything of value when back home in the US because the nature of street crime is very different than tourist crime in Europe/Eastern Europe. Pickpockets in Europe are stealth operators, they survive by being non-confrontational and unseen and represent the vast majority of street crime. They have no need or desire to carry weapons. Back home in the US it is all different, the street crime is often intentionally confrontational and usually involved guns. I have been traveling in 86 countries and the only one where I really am concerned is where there are so many handguns, the US but Brazil used to be worse. Now that its economy has improved so much, it is safer than the US for tourists. South Africa and Columbia used to be the worst for gun violence but both have dropped a great deal, also because of the increased optimism that comes from a growing economy. In street crime cases in the US, the identity of the camera, its strap security and value are not going to matter. The likelihood of a bad outcome is high. Be aware of surroundings and area is probably your most important protections, not the strap labels or carrying method. These are all things that I should be thinking about since I board a plane for London in a few hours and then one to the US a day later.
