I've pre-ordered D800E from Berger Bros, but mainly I shoot family events and Studio portrais and hate see moir. Now I'm considering to switch to D800 instead of D800E and any opinions are highly appreciated.

I think you should change to the non-E version. I ordered "just" the D800 because A) I don't want to have to deal with an additional step of dealing with moire; B) I am very confident that the detail from the 36mgpxls will be so incredible that there will be no needed to sharpen that detail anymore than I can do in either in-camera or post processing. When we see photos of the two side by side I seriously doubt you will be able to find the advantage of the "E". But, I could be wrong.

I agree the straight D800 is more than enough for 99% of all users . I can't believe Nikon would make a sharp and un-sharp version . Its more new snake oil - VR - Nano coatings , most say the glass is the limiting factor with the D800's resolution . There are a few side by side images for E and Non E on a 10 x (guess ) magnification view of a 100% file . Yes the E has more contrast and maybe a bit sharper . I'm always sharpening images I wasn't WOWed by the Detail gain .

The fact that Nikon put an AA filter into the mainstream model, and the low volume E model has none should tell us something. Surely, Nikon will have exhaustively tested each model in every possible condition. If the non-AA camera would really work best for the majority of the scenes, I would have guessed Nikon would have made it the mainstream model, and the "special edition" model would have the AA filter.


Look at Lloyd Chamber's blog on this subject, how ugly the moire can be, and how dull and lifeless the image becomes when the moire is removed in post processing:
