I just found highly controlled matched images from a D800 and D800E on Luminous Landscape and they confirm my gut instincts of last February — so I switched my B&H pre order back to a D800E. Not a huge difference in detail and resolution but more than enough to see and appreciate … which is my entire purpose in getting this new camera in the first place. Also, since no moire appears in these currency images I do not think moire will be a serious problem in my studio photos of my wife's coarser-patterned jewelry.

I have been contemplating your very interesting and candid post for a few days. And I agree with you. You make sense. Thank you... you opened my eyes.
From what I have read on posts in Japan there seems to be little or no problems with moire. More image comparison are being posted on various sites between the D800 and D800E. Not being a pro, I don't have to be perfect. I also do not think moire is going to be a significant issue. If I find it is then I will shoot at different angles. Visually, there is a difference to my eyes between the D800 and the D800E. Besides, it will optimize my Nikon G glass.
After reading some clever posts on the internet, I called various NIkon dealers around the Country until I found one that had D800E's allocations coming in on some predicable basis. Now, I am on that waiting list and expect to have it in hand during the next 30 days. Hopefully, sooner.
For me, this feels like the right decision. Interestingly, is some parts of the USA there is a much longer waiting list for the Nikon D800 than the Nikon D800E. Good luck.
