"D800: Don't get your hopes up"
Mon 30-Jan-12 12:27 AM by ZoneV

I have no inside information, but what I do have is an intution from being a close and careful Nikon digital follower since the inception of the D-series. I've faithfully read Thom Hogan all this time too. I have a decent feel for how Nikon does things. I also have some faith (but not total faith) in nikonrumors.com and their leaked alleged D800 specs.

So here's what I have to say: I think Nikon's market strategy with the D800 is changing. The D700 was made as a D3-lite to help win over sports and PJ photographers. It was high speed, low noise, and moderate resolution. But with the D800, I believe Nikon will be more directly targeting nature, architecture, wedding, corporate, high-caliber editorial, and fine-art photographers, including those who wish or need to record video. Remember a high-level Nikon employee saying that future DSLRs would provide a better balance of sensitivity and resolution? I believe that was their way of saying the D800 will have at least 24 MP (nikonrumors says 36MP, but I am skeptical it will be quite that high).

So don't expect the D800 to:

-Have less than 24MP. Nikon wants to compete with the Canon 5D series on a MP level and win over as many of the "huge print photographers". These are people who regularly produce 20x30 and larger prints.

-Be less expensive than the D700 or even equal in price. Look for it to be priced somewhat higher than the D700 when it came out.

-Be as fast as the D700. It's not likely to shoot at 8, 7, or even 6 fps.

-Have the same per pixel signal to noise ratio as the D700. Due to the increase in pixels, the D800 would likely not have quite the same level of cleanliness at high ISO per pixel. Of course, prints might show equal noise to the D700, because some resolution and noise are discarded when downsampling.

-Have a higher top ISO than the D700. Sensor and processor technology now allows a finer pixel pitch with the same image quality, but Nikon is likely to increase the pixel count just a bit more still. Remember, this camera has to last for 4 years in the market.

We're likely to get a boost in MP, but the camera might not be quite as sports/PJ oriented as the D700. It will still be capable in that regard, but it probably won't be the near equal to the D4 the same way the D700 was to the D3. Keep reasonable expections, and you won't be disappointed.

An undeniable paradox: To think that there is any such thing as an absolute rule is at worst naïve, and at best, shortsighted. There is no such thing as an always-true, all context- or situation-salient, absolute rule that always holds true…including this one!

Apparently nobody knows yet.

This is getting tiring. Why not just wait a week or so to see if they announce something, and if they do, what it is?

BTW, IMOH, citing TH and NR as a source doesn't increase your creditability. Now if you work for Nikon Japan as one of the top managers in the camera division...

This post is timely if for no other reason than to get people thinking. There is post after post of "Should I order/preorder/wait..." with nothing more than rumors and speculation that the D800 is going to be a D700+. It is feasible that the D800 will have no performance resemblance to the D700.

The landscapes I shoot do not move very fast. I think that 4-5 fps, per the speculation, will be very adequate to meet my needs. The D800 is clearly not rumored to be a sports/PJ camera so there is no reasonable basis for disappointment in that regard. There is no factual basis upon which to say that the noise level will be bad. I am not expecting a super high ISO camera, nor is the D800 rumored to be such a camera. If the specs are as good as those stated on the Nikonrumors website I will be thrilled. There are many of us who are looking for exactly that kind of camera and will not be disappointed in any way if that is what the D800 turns out to be. The sports shooters and PJ folks should buy the D4.

Hi Dave,

You may need to make an appointment with your optometrist. The man on the stair is clearly there. Just kidding. It is pretty comical how so many spend so much time engaging in this type of speculation. I also just could not resist making a tounge in cheek comment pointing out that not everyone wants the same type of camera. I hope that the D800 or Ford Pinto or whatever they call this rumored to be camera does have great resolution and is designed for obtaining the best possible image quality while sacrificing extreme high ISO and frame advance speed. I guess we will all know soon. My only point is that one should not assume that all of us want the same features. IF the rumors are correct on the timing we will find out next week what Nikon is really going to offer. I can see the man. I am sorry that you cannot.

Very interesting reading. I am extremely curious what will appear from Nikon. And regardless what appears, I'm sure someone will benefit... Maybe me!

A separate forum to speculate on what Nikon will come out with next is OK with me.
I think it should include Rumors and what we want to see in our next camera.

The two things that attract me most about the Rumored D800 are lower price and weight than a D4.
I shoot at 4fps so that is fast enough for me.
I already use an EN-EL15 battery and SD cards in my V1 and D7000.
I would probably shoot Fine Medium JPEGs at Events.
I am hoping for a 2.7 crop mode but probably would not use it.
I also would probably not use the WT-5A but like the option.
The Video must equal or exceed the D4 at least up to ISO 6400.

I agree with your line of thinking Al,

I would add one further item to this theis:
- we never got a D700S (D700 with a D3S sensor). There must have been a reason for that.

Absolutely. Nikon knows exactly what they are doing.

An undeniable paradox: To think that there is any such thing as an absolute rule is at worst naïve, and at best, shortsighted. There is no such thing as an always-true, all context- or situation-salient, absolute rule that always holds true…including this one!

Can we assume that since you have authored all of these posts about the D4 and the D700 successor, probably at least 10 of them, that you will be ordering a D4 or at least a D800? We're all looking forward to your posts and comments about either of these new cameras.

Not for a long time due to budget...but I do want to try one out sooner rather than later. Not sure if I'll really be able to do so, but I'd like to. If I do get the chance, you all will be the first to hear it. It's possible that a good friend of mine who is a wedding photog *might* be buying a D800. If he does buy one early (he ordered the D700 as soon as it was announced), I will try it out and write a thorough impression.

I have no real interest in a D800 as my D700 does most things very well, however I eagerly await the D400 to replace my D7000. One thing I observed from the originators post was interesting. If by "nature" you mean moving subjects too, then the fps could limit the appeal especially for birds in flight and sports photographers too.

A Brazilian site has posted data on the D800 along with 6 photos. The specs listed are just as posted on NikonRumor.com for the last few weeks:
36.3mpx, 4fps without the grip, 6 with grip. 15mpx in DX crop mode, D4 like video, VF face tracking, 50-25k ISO, with a 100-12k unextended range. Official announcement Tuesday(it is Tuesday now in St Petersburg)
I am sure it will be of interest to those who keep demanding D3x or greater res but at an affordable price. It greatly increased the distance between the Dx and Dxxx full frame offerings. Some well heeled enthusiasts will think they need both since there are so different.

Thanks for the update, Stan. It's going to be an awesome camera, to be sure, but I think that for me, it would be too much camera. I'm still getting used to my D700.

I'm with you Anthony. And I think if I even hinted about the D800, I'd end up in the divorce courts 36mp!!!! More storage needed!!!! But it does look very nice

Monterey Bay, US

It is officially announced and on the Nikon site.
My hopes are still up for High ISO performance.
I like everything else about the D800, especially price.
I may not have enough money when the D4 is ready to pick up.

If the focusing speed and accuracy are better than the D3 (not D3s)
and the pictures better at ISO 6400, I will get the D800 instead.

Bring on the Hi ISO "Hands On" test, pictures, and DxO comparisons.

Visit my Nikonians gallery.
