"D800 Pre-Order at Berger Brothers"
Fri 06-Jan-12 03:45 PM by wkramer

Port Washington/New York, US

Just got off the phone with Lisa at Berger Brothers. Will be putting down a deposit on the new D800 (soon to be announced). She says price should be around $3900. Deposit is fully refundable. I've been on their list for a call since March.

Seems very speculative to me on their part. I personally wouldn't put a deposit down on an unannounced product no matter how reputable the company. But I hope it works out for you!

I would expect that is a good guess for the D800 price. the D700 is still $2699 and the D4 is $5999, so at $3900, the D800 may be accurately priced.

Tom - I'm a bit of a neophyte here, but Berger Bros is showing the pre order price on their website at something like $2,999. Is it standard practice to later bump the price once the product is received in stock even if one has a deposit in place?

If you look at the dates of the above comments, they were before the D800 was announced. No one knew what the price would be. I can assure you that neither Berger Bros or anyone else is going to boost the price above the 2999 figure.

At that price I guess I will not be moving up to full frame. Looking for D400 now.

I'm NOT an early adopter, and waited forever for the D700 to drop below $2K. Never happened. Am seriously glad I finally took the plunge for $2200... Love the D700!

If you want a full frame why not just get a D700? I love mine and use it as a Pro/armature extensively. To me when the D800 is announces it would be a great time to pick up a d700 on the used market. You know there will be people selling to upgrade.

In the UK that would represent around Ł2580! I have no intention of getting rid of my D700 which cost me Ł1750 nearly 3 years ago and still retails for the same price, or even more. Roll on the D400 so I can upgrade my D7000, but that's only providing reports here and elsewhere after about 4 - 6 months of the launch fill me with confidence.

If photographers don't rush out and buy the camera at it's release price then Nikon might take fright and drop the price but if they buy at the initial price then Nikon will think that they are on a winner and a price drop won't happen?

So why should we 'upgrade' to the D800?
I bought my D700 in 2008, am 51 years old now and i think i should be set for the rest of my life.
If i want to use my F2 i'm free to do that.

So what kind of features will the D800 have? I don't think we get another fantastic features compared to the D700, except the $4k.

So no hurry at all!

I think the world economy has changed this. I bought my D7000 last January for $1199 US and they are $1299 today. I haven't seen any cameras or lenses dropping in price in the past year unless they have been discontinued.

Ah, but then why has the D300s in the UK has been discounted by Ł100 - Ł150 ($151-225) in the last few days then. Perhaps it is currency fluctuations, but all other cameras are holding their prices.

Just because the d800 is rumored, that does not make the D700 obsolete or a lousy performer. The D800 when it comes will not be the radical departure the D700 was.

Well, I guess if you want to be at the front of the line and there is essentially no cost, why not.

It surprises me that they are taking deposits on a non-existent product. Maybe I should order my D6?

$4000 for Nikon's entry level full frame body??? I'll definitely be sticking with my D300s and stay with DX.

If you recall the D700 debuted at $3000. And if you factor in (for the US anyway) the declining dollar that would probably be $3500 today. As to whether it is the entry level... that's debatable. The D700 qualified for NPS so it's more fair to say it's the less expensive pro FX camera.

I bought my D700 in the first month that it became available in Canada from my local camera shop and paid 1999.00$ plus tax. That as in August 2008 I think.
This is the first camera that I own that is now selling for more.
As a mater of fact all my electronic equip, with the exception of the D700, depreciate in value quite quickly.

Sorry I gave you the wrong information - the price quoted was for the D300. I paid 3200$ for the D700 in August 2008.

Will you get your money back if it's a D732, and will you still be in line if it's a D860? Are any of you sure that it's going to be a D800?

No matter what the camera is, Berger Bros. is a highly reputable company, and a corporate partner of this community, and Brad and Lisa aren't going to "stick it" to anyone. They aren't that kind of business people.

I'm sure that that is true and that wasn't my point. I just thought that it was silly for people to be ordering cameras that don't exist, haven't even been announced, or may never be announced. If I wanted a D5, I wouldn't hesitate to order from Berger Bros., B&H, Adorama, or Roberts. Let me know if I missed any of our friends.

I'm sorry that I even responded to such a stupid thread.

JP, I didn't understand that was your point. I love to speculate, and try to figure what Nikon is going to bring out. But for me, I waited until I knew what the D4 actually was going to be, before ordering it. I won't second guess though, people who want to be early adopters of the D700 replacement. I merely hope the camera is exactly what they want it to be.

I think this should be clarified. The so-called "pre-order" list is not an "order", is not a commitment, and is not an exchange of money.

It is a "list" plain and simple. I got on it a long time ago when the first rumors of a D800 or whatever it will be called, started to circulate. Recently Lisa called and asked if I was still interested. I told her that I wasn't sure until I see the actual specs. I told her that I would get back to her with in 24hrs of the announcement and tell her if I was still interested. She was fine with that. I suppose at that time I will be asked to put down some small deposit, which seems reasonable to me.

I don't think speculation about a D800 is foolish or unreasonable, anymore than speculation about a D4 was. Obviously there will be some next generation camera after the D700 and I think it is a very nice courtesy that Berger Bros is will to maintain a list of those interested. They should be applauded for it.

I have buying all if my gear from Brad for several years. I am in the process of switching teams (canon to Nikon) and Brad has been great to deal with. I highly recommend Berger Bros.

Once all the bugs are out of this one, then i will buy it. I like to wait 4 to 6 months.
