"D4, D800 & D800E hands-on report"

Kockengen, NL

Hi all,

As a Nikon Professional Services member I had the unique opportunity to hold Netherlands' only D4, D800, and D800E cameras in my hands today. Truly remarkable beasts!

I've posted a full report on my blog. Please feel free to comment/ask questions.

Enjoy, and start saving

Thanks for the report Hayo.

Very well explained on D800 versus D800E section.

"For the D4 I would really have loved to have had even higher frames per second. 10fps is only one more than the 9 I now have, and that definitely isn't always fast enough, so likely 10 isn't fast enough either. I had hoped for 12 (like the latest Canon 1Dx)."

How fast, is fast enough?

I agree. If you can't nail it with 10 shots, something is wrong. I think most users will be happy with a more robust and accurate AF at 10/11fps.

Thanks for posting your user impressions though. They didn't allow me to use my CF cards either when I used them at the CP+ in Yokohama, Japan.

Regards,

Glenn

From my experience with shooting e.g., flying birds and running animals (but I'm sure the same holds true for e.g., football and other sports), even at 9fps, the position of the wings/legs isn't always pleasing in the resulting shots. This is especially true when shooting more than one animal in the same frame. An intermediate shot many times would have been the better one. Perhaps I'm being picky about this, but I like my shots to be as perfect as possible…

Anyway, hence my request for even more fps. And, yes, how fast is fast enough is a tough question. Perhaps even Canon's 12fps isn't enough. But as they have it (actually up to 14fps without metering and AF), I had kinda hoped for a more dramatic increase with the new Nikons.

Thanks for commenting!

Cheers,

Okay, Hayo, you sold me. I'm getting one (800e). Oh, wait, I already ordered it. Maybe I'll order another.

One of the worse feeling is to return both cameras after using them. It was like someone took a candy from a baby.

They even taped the card access cover so that no one could use their own memory card. Both were just a joy to use but the D4 won me over. Side by side with the D800 (left) and my D700 (right).

Glenn
