I hope Amazon is just posting a placeholder. I checked my order for the D800 which I placed at around 6am cst on Feb 7 and it says the estimated ship date is Jan 2, 2013! Good thing I still love my D700!

Look on the bright side , if you put aside only $65 a week it will be paid for before it ships .


I got the same message with other pre orders that shipped on release day. I would not worry .

One B&H employee wrote in that there was no place holding . If you pre order 2 seconds after the email or two weeks later it's the same . Forget that happy feeling like you took number and you're at the head of the line .... or sleeping in front of the store till it opens ... No . B & H is showing March 22 shipment for a stock D800 ,

I don't understand B & H no place holder.

I spoke with a B & H rep out on the West Coast on Sunday and he said the same thing--no way to know where you are in line...that makes no sense to me...is it lottery style?

Thinking of ordering with my local and beloved Ritz...

However, I do like the $65 a week lay-away plan and I am a little curious as to what order B&H will fulfill the pre-orders...

Must be one huge mailing when it comes in . No one is ahead in line .


I think they are testing the waters , If they reach their number / limit of pre-orders. This tells the manufacture to run 1 or 3 shifts . So it gives them a cushion to gauge demand / production .

Hi guys,

I would like to ask you all this: How sure the D800 will be released on March 22nd in Paris ? Does anyone knows anything about that ?
The reason I'm asking this is because I live in Brazil and I'm planning a trip to Europe to get the camera.
Did Nikon always released cameras on the date estimated or not ?
Any sugestion on getting these cameras ( yes, I'll take two ! )in France or Germany, will be very appreciated.

Oh, and BTW, does anyone knows some good place to get them up there ? I know a few shops, but would like to check with you guys !

No-one here knows anything for sure about D800 availability. But - if I were to guess, I'd say that unless you are already high on a retailer's waiting list you will struggle to get one (let alone two) on the first day of release

Prices in Brazil are too high due to taxes. Here we pay at least twice the price you guys pay. I will check Fnac's price in Paris.

While at WPPI I got it out of one of the BH Photo sales reps that the waiting list is looooonnnggg. He event mentioned of a famous video producer preordering 25 d800's. Sounds like the next 5d mark II to me. I remember going into a camera store and watching some indie nerds picking them up ten at a time. I waited almost 6 months for my first 5d mark II and Canon has much more efficient factories than Nikon when it comes to mfg in large quantities. I mean why are D7000's always sold out? They should be able to keep up with supply and demand. I'm worried I'll be waiting another 3-6 months for my D800's which I preordered on day 1. What sucks for me is I'm switching from Canon so for now I will be stuck using both systems since I use video a lot.

The D7000 is a great camera so the demand is high & having the Nikon factory in Thailand where they make it flooded for several months last year possibly caused problems with supply.
