"Just cancelled my D-800 order"

Quincy, US

After quite a lot of thought I just cancelled my D-800 order and instead pre-ordered a D-4. I just don't see myself making billboard sized prints & I already get exquisitely detailed A-3 size prints via my D3X.

I've been using a D3 and a D3X and I feel that I can use the D4's attributes to replace the D3 and the D3X, with 24.4 megapixels, will allow me to make large prints of excellent quality.

I'm not saying I won't buy a D-800 in the future but I want to handle one and try one out when they become available to see if it's something I want/need.

Sorry to hear you cancelled the order . I'm still using my D300 so turning down the FX with a smaller file size or DX lens will be better than what I have . I feel most user wont shoot Large RAW files all the time . So its a 25 - 15 MP camera for average use .
36 MP is just more cropping acreage.

Sounds reasonable.

The new Canon has some cool to it, but no uncompressed out.

The D4 allows direct to disk but, no simultaneous live view.

I have deposits on the D800 and the D4, possibly choosing one over the other, or both, once I find an armored car turned over on the freeway.

If I had a D3x, I would not be getting a D800 either. It remains to be seen by how much, if anything, the D800 might improve on the D3x image quality. I doubt it will make a difference. The D4 looks to be a much better complement to the D3x, so I think you made the right call.

I agree, Tom. I'm extremely happy with my D3X photos and don't see a reason to get a D800. I don't have a D3S so the D4 looks like my next body unless the D400 is a real killer. I will be looking for an upgrade to my D300 eventually.

You are right - if you have a D3x and have no D3s - you should better add a D4. But if you have both D3x and D3s - the situation is different. D4 is even a less a step forward in comparison to D3s. Maybe the most wise scenario is to ignore both new cameras - but NAS forces me to buy at least one of them, and D800 is cheaper

Lucky for me, I will have up to 30 days to evaluate the D800 before deciding whether to keep it or go for the D4.
I am relieved that the D4 has been delayed.

I am first on both list and was afraid I would have to pass on the D4.
The extra weight of the D4 will not balance well if I take all those extra C-notes out of my wallet,
but I may need that extra High ISO capability.
So, if I actually like the D800 enough to keep it,
I may end up with a used D3s as dedicated Event camera.
Otherwise, I will get the D4 to use at Events and for Video.

Yup, NAS made me do it!

I tried to tell that to my wife but she just does not understand who NAS is.
Maybe she will relate better to the 20th pair of white Tennis Shoes she bought last year.

Lucky indeed! She pays for her own shoes out of her SS money and they are the $20 variety.
Kathy is a comparably "low maintenance" and very loving wife of almost 28 years.
Quite the contrast to my first one, who luckily left me after only 10 years.
