"Picture Control for D800/D800E"

Near Sacramento, US

Hi there!

I have been enjoying the videos and resources on Nikon's website for the D800. Really appreciate how many features are now available with buttons and not buried in menus.

My question is with the "Picture Control" selection...this is only for jpeg images, isn't it?

Have finally gone to shooting RAW only.

Thanks much!

Laura

As you have stated, picture control affects the JPG and does not change the NEF data. The effects of the Picture Controls show on your camera's LCD display of the image and the in camera histogram.

Even though it does not affect the NEF data, the Picture Control setting is used in the rendering of the image in Nikon View NX2 and Capture NX2. In Nikon software you can override the Picture Control setting by selecting a different setting in the rendering of the NEF file. Non Nikon software ignores the Picture Control setting.

That's not true for Photoshop: when you open a NEF file in Adobe Camera Raw you can adjust the Picture Controle settings under the camera calibration tab.

Yes but ACR does not read the Picture Contol set in the camera. The picture control under the the calibration tab provide effects similar to the in camera settings but do not follow the in camera setting.

The easiest way to demonstrate this is set your camera to monochrome and the process the NEF in ACR. With Nikon software you will see a monochrome image that you can change back to color using the picture control selection. In ACR I believe the initial rendering will be in color.

Yes, I think we agree Gary, the default setting is Adobe Standard. I just wanted to make the point that you can use any picture controle setting in ACR.

Picture controls affect the LCD jpeg, and the highlight indicator.
