First of all thanks for all the great information and article leads here regarding the Nikon 800 and 800E. Based on lots of reading for the past few days I've pre-ordered a D800E. I have the Nikon 70-200 2.8, Nikon 300mm 2.8 and Nikon 24-120 f4 and recently picked up the Nikon 105 Micro f2.8. I've been shooting with the D300 and D300S and wanted a full frame camera for sometime.... So this should be a great addition and looking forward to seeing what it can do in the field. Since I shoot mostly handheld and focus on wildlife and landscapes this sounded like a better choice. Also should be getting my first tripod in the coming months. Hope to see images from those of you who get your hands on this camera as soon as possible.

According to my understanding, that would be a reason to choose the D800, NOT the D800E, or even to stay with a D700 (or a D3, D3s, or even D4 if money were not a constraint). To get the max out of that camera, I have read somewhere that even Nikon recommend to use a tripod and to stop down the camera...

Oh, and Micro 105 f/4?

After re-reading some of the articles and reviews I stand corrected. A little confusing looking at all the technical data and reading half a dozen articles... The company I buy my equipment from in Orlando told me 80% of the pre-orders they've received are for the 800 vs the 800E. I'll be calling them tomorrow to make the change.

Regarding the 105mm... long day at work and a short night ... repeated the specs from the 24-120... 105 Micro is a 2.8 ...thanks for the catch and input. Looking forward to working with this camera and seeing what it can do.

Like yours, most of my memorable shots are hand-held shots from wildlife or landscapes. Yet I ordered the D800E and I will stand by my decision. Why? Firstly, in virtually all of the cases, the difference between the D800 and D800E is insignificant. Moiré will be present if 1) the motive includes a very fine, regular pattern whose spatial frequency almost, but not quite, matches that of the sensor (a rare occurrence in nature), 2) that fine regular pattern is in sharp focus (an even rarer occurrence) and 3) my lens and shooting practice enable the sensor to resolve that fine, regular pattern. Why did I choose the D800E if it makes no difference in 99% of the cases? Firstly because I want to get a few big, incredibly sharp prints to be mounted on my walls (tripod, prime lens) and secondly for the sheer satisfaction of owning a camera that appears produce the sharpest shots in the world, excepting medium-format or even bigger cameras. Sheer vanity? Guilty as charged.

I think as they say.. the proof is in the pudding...and most of us aren't going to know the true impact of this camera until it's been out in the field or someones studio for a months. I've read the same thing as you.. .that 99% of the time...there is no difference.. and I agree with some that manufacturing two different cameras with one small change in the filter system is a great marketing ploy. Either way... I've wanted a full frame camera and was thinking about the 700 until I read about the 800 and decided on that...The 36 megapixel wasnt a deciding factor for me although who knows.. it might offer some benefit in the future depending on how my business goes. I'm hoping like the D300 ...that Nikon has come up with another killer product that lives up to all the hype.
