"Test shots with my new D800"
Sat 24-Mar-12 01:12 PM by Arkayem

Richmond Hill, GA (Savannah), US

The first image is a jpeg shot of my house.

The 2nd image is a crop from the first image of the flag in front of my house. This demonstrates the excellent cropping I was hoping for with 36MP of resolution! This was a hand-held large standard jpeg at f/2.8, 1/1250th, ISO 100, using a 24-70mm lens at 24mm.

The 3rd image is indoors without flash handheld, raw, ISO 6400, 70mm, 1/60th, f/2.8.

I have done no pp on any of these.

I think these demonstrate the exceptional accuracy of the exposure and excellent jpeg processing in the camera. I could see very little improvement with raw images over jpegs.

Also, the noise at ISO 6400 is lower than I thought it would be.

LOL - I had no idea the clock is a Sears and Roebuck. We bought it at an antique auction.

Those are very impressive examples. Would you consider posting the same shots with your D3 just for comparison?

Russ,
Great shots...
I am trying out my D800 for the first time this morning and am getting a very slow image playback. After pressing shutter, it's around 3-4 seconds before the resulting image is displayed.
Are you experiencing this? I should mention that I'm using a Lexor 32gb Platinum II SDHC - 100x (class 10) card at the moment. Acquired the D800 sooner than envisioned and have not yet bought a CF card.
Thanks,

Glenn

Hi Glenn, Yes! With slower cards the wait is very long. Lexar is an excellent brand, but I don't have any fast Lexar cards to try. I do have Transcend 16GB 400X cards and they work great. The delay is very short.

I've used Transcend cards in my D3 for years, and they have always worked perfectly, and are always less than half the price of an equivalent SanDisk.

I have ordered a Transcend 32GB 400X CF card as well as a Transcend 32GB SDHC 10 card to use in my D800.

I do wish that both cards were CF, but on the other hand, the SDHC cards are half the price (at least in the Transcend brand). I like that you can pick which card you want to be the primary, with the SDHC card primary by default. If SDHC proves reliable, I will probably leave it as primary.

Yes, I will try taking the same pictures with my D3 and see how they compare.

However, the thing I was really trying to prove to myself is that you don't have to use a tripod to get sharp images, and that jpegs are good enough for non-critical wedding shots (receptions). The D800 focusing system is fantastic, and if you use good handholding techniques, and a good lens, you will get sharp images. And the jpeg conversion in-camera is superb.

Russ,
Yes, thanks for sharing. Even though I don't own the D3, I also would be curious to see side by side comparisons between the D3 and the D800.
Congrats on your purchase.

I shot this morning with Sandisk Extreme Pro's in both the CF and the SD card slots. Playback was instant.

Thanks for the post Russ, images look great. I'm still waiting on my D800, and it's reassuring to know that it will be worth the wait.

Russ,

When you got a chance to test out the iTTL flash please let us know if it behaves differently compared to older Nikon DSLR cameras. I suspect we may see some differences.

Thanks.

I am very happy to hear the Transcend cards work with the D800 as I have a few 32GB 400x cards here for my Canon XF100 video camera.
