"Hands on D800 Diary - First 3 days"

GB

I have had the D800 for 3 days now. Having upgraded from a D200 the jump couldn't be much bigger. I have written a detailed blog of my day to day workings with the D800. I intend to continue this for the next few weeks.

It isn't a technical blog - just my thoughts and some images.

D800 Diary >> http://www.imageandlight.net/blog

Hope this is useful and interesting to some people who have a D800, are thinking about getting one or are just interested in photography.

Thanks

Nigel

Nigel,

May I invite you to submit a 6×9 vertical crop of Emily (day 3) to the Mastering the Nikon D800 call for images thread:

http://www.nikonians.org/forums/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=226&topic_id=39540&mesg_id=39540&page=

Your excellent shot of Emily on a black background is great, as are some of your sports and bird shots.

Those accepted are published in a very popular world-wide book with full credit and receive a free copy of Mastering the Nikon D800 when it is released. Thanks!

Why can't you upload, Nigel?

If you can't upload then post a link to your image crop with a little more head and shoulders showing (no head cut off). Post in color and B&W if you have both. Her smile and cute little face is captivating!

Nigel,

Excellent. Thank you for putting that together.

Like you, I am a D200 user - very tempted to flex the plastic now!

Your work is excellent. I think that that is what most of us have been waiting to see to help evaluate the abilities of the D800.

Your third generation iPad apps discussion is also greatly appreciated. Having just purchased the new iPad and expecting a D800 tomorrow, I am going to re-read your blog in much greater detail. I would not have had a clue as to which apps to download were it not for your post.

Thank you,

jP

Great Blog. I also have been using the D200 waiting for the new generation of cameras. Looking at your images I am stepping up my search for the D800.

Question, was your images taken on a tripod or all hand-held?

Thanks.

Another D200 user here looking to upgrade to the D800. I didn't realize there were still so many of us D200 users.

Thanks very much for your posts and the info at your blog. I had a chance to look at a D800 yesterday and am curious why you would choose to crop in the camera as opposed to cropping on your computer. Since the image in the viewfinder is exactly the same in FF or DX mode (only the black format outline changes in the VF), I don;t see any advantage to cropping in camera - certainly doesn't help you focus any better since the image is exactly the same (guess you could use LV and zoom in, but that;s not practical in many cases).
So what is your thinking on that subject? I am "replacing" my D7000, which I use primarily for long shots (with my D700 on the other shoulder for closer shots), and was thinking that the VF would actually change with crop mode (okay, so I wasn't actually "thinking..") But in any curious, any thoughts on that?
Dennis
