"How to save images as date and time?"

US

Hey everyone,
I am new here and I been searching all over and I can not find how to save my images as date and time rather than image number. I am trying to combine a few memory cards of work and I want to be able to just drag and drop and they can fit in as they were taken. Any help is greatly appreciated!

What software are you using? Lightroom will rename as date and, perhaps time, by setting import parameters.

What version of Lightroom are you using? In Version 3, when you select the Import dialog, the File Renaming is located on the top right side. There is a drop down arrow under File Renaming. Click on that drop down arrow and you can choose your custom settings. Once you choose your custom settings for your file renaming you can save and name it.

Do you really need the time in the filename? My naming convention is ANddmmyy-x x). “AN” stands for Antero’s Nikon (to distinguish them from my wife’s Nikon and my own cameras of other brands or smartphones). I use three or four digits in the index number, depending on how many digits I need for each day’s session. I always start the index number from 100 or 1000 so that each index number has the same number of digits (improves sorting). Nikon’s TransferNX2 (now part of ViewNX2) can also rename on import, but I don’t think it can set the date automatically. Instead it is necessary to type the date (ANddmmyy) manually, and that gets inconvenient if there are shots from several days in a single import session.

Regards, Antero

No, you do it as part of the post processing action using Nikon Transfer or other program. The cameras should only recognize the 8.3 file naming convention. See the "Help" for the Nikon View NX2 or the program you are using to transfer the files. Many of these programs can obtain the date and time the image was taken from the EXIF meta data written into the image file by the camera.

Do it as a preference within nikon transer. It is on the computer side, in the transfer software.
later, you can also search for any date files, in a pinch.
I never try from the caerma side. (I'm a hobbiest)
Also, in "file info" within PS under the File menu or is: camera data-- and all the info you should put in, even captions & tags...

alt g for the © symbol, but do set up that within transfer.
In nikon tranfer, each time, you can also put, in effect, a tag word, for example "kids" or any word tag for searching later.
Workflow is a huge subject. Rememeber to have fun with that sort of dry, bookkeeping aspect. Any file is searchable by date, too, later on via the computer (image & date created)

The only reason I want to save as date and time is for the book keeping mumbo jumbo. And when I combine images from other memory cards. Thanks everyone for the help!

Third party transfer utilities will do this and more for you. I use Downloader Pro by BreezeSys.com to rename my files from dsc_nnnn to yyyymmdd_nnnn.
