When I first got a digital camera some 13 years ago I tried downloading the files directly from the camera. I found that to be a pain. Sometimes the computer would find the camera, sometimes not. After two days of messing around I got a card reader and since then have only used a card reader. You don't need any software at all. The computer treats the card and reader as another external drive. Do yourself a favor and get a good multi-card reader that can use different type cards. Also get one that matches the fastest interface port your computer has.

I suspect that you are using only one card. Using View NX 2, plug the USB first. Then plug in the camera and the View NX 2 should pop up after a few moments. When it does, press the "Source" tab and then press the camera icon (it should have the camera designation D600, D800, depending on the camera you've plugged in). You will see the following:
Slot 1 Slot 2 __________ Deselect
Press "Slot 2" and the transfer should be almost instantaneous.
