"Replacement usb 3.0 cable for D800"

Oakland, US

I've misplaced my cable. Nikon sells a replacement for $40 and B&H/Adorama for $30. The cable appears on the Nikon site to be a standard usb 3.0 cable with a micro B connector. Does anyone know whether Nikon's cable for the D800 is proprietary or can one go with the $7.95 replacement from New Egg?

Yes, it is a standard Micro USB 3.0 B connector.

Also, if you want to make sure, take the cable from your non-Apple cell phone (everybody else's uses the standardized Micro B connector) and you can plug it into half of the plug on the D800. Which, by the way, is fully supported, and a way to transfer files at USB 2.0 speeds - especially useful when traveling, as it's one fewer cable type to carry (the same one charges your cell phone and transfers your photos). If you don't have USB 3.0 on all of your computers yet, I'd suggest picking up one of each, they standard Micro B are handy with dozens of devices.

Thank you! I wonder why Nikon thinks their brand name on a cable makes it worth $40, when a good quality generic cable costs $10? Buyer beware, I guess.

I bought a 3.0m (10ft) non-Nikon USB 3.0 cable to use ControlMyNikon from a comfortable distance. It works perfectly. In one of his tutorials, the creator of ControlMyNikon says that Nikon cameras can be critical as regards quality of the USB cable. I also have a USB 3.0 extension cable (also 10ft) that works between my main computer and a USB 3.0 card reader, but that extension cable (plus the original D800E USB cable) doesn't work with my D800E.

Regards, Antero

One thing you loose with generic cables is the ability to secure the cable with the little plastic piece that comes with the camera. Not a big deal in my experience...
