"Unable to turn on AF Assist light on D800"

Brooklyn, US

Just started testing my new D800 and I am unable to get the AF Assist light to turn on. I have placed the camera in conditions where it should illuminate and it does not. I have it set to ON in the menu screen.

Can anyone tell me what I'm missing or do I have a defective camera? I just exchanged the last one for the "left focus" issue

Thanks for any help.

According to the manual page 286:

"AF-assist illumination is only available when both of the following conditions are met:
1 AF-S is selected for autofocus mode (091).
2 Auto-area AF is chosen for AF-area mode (093), or an option other than auto-area AF is chosen and the center focus point is selected."

The numbers in parenthesis are page numbers.

I'm only a few hundred pages into Darrell Young's book, I would have gotten to this eventually. Thanks for the help.

Is the af point in center position when you try?

No, I was mostly shooting portraits in the studio and was using an autofocus point other than the center. Camera had an alien bees transmitter on top for the strobes - not sure if that had an impact...

Then it's normal. It will only work for centered af point. Probably because the assistance light is too narrow to cover the other ones...

I assume this was true on my last Nikon body I just never noticed. Thanks for the help.
