"D800/D800E Save/load settings"

San Jose, US

It's not hugely important, but can someone please tell me whether this should work?

I've JUST received a new D800E as a stablemate to my beloved D800. I expected to be able to transfer all settings from the 800 to the 800E - but so far, it seems that the "E" will not read the file that I saved on the 800. Obviously, I expected that it would!

If it SHOULD work, please suggest what I might be doing wrong.

With thanks in advance,

Pete

What worked for me is to save the D800E settings onto the memory car and then exchange the file with the D800's file and reload settings.... In this, the E will make the folders on the memory card needed so it knows where to look for the file.

If you just put the file on the memory card, the camera will not see it. I had to do above steps in order to get the camera to "see" the file.

Hope this helps you out,

Chris

Thanks Chris. I'll play some more!

Here's what I did earlier:
I freshly formatted a card in the 800, saved its settings and then transferred the card to the "E". However, the E refuses to load the file.

This should work:

1. Format a CF card in the D800 and save the settings.

2. Put the card in your computer - locate the settings file NCSETUP8 and copy it to the PC's hard drive.

3. Format another CF card in the D800E and save the settings.

4. Put this card in computer. Locate the D800E's settings file (also called NCSETUP8) and replace it with NCSETUP8 from the D800.

The folder structure has to be maintained otherwise it won't work - i.e. wherever the D800E's setup file was, that's where the D800's file has to go.

PS. Don't change the file names.

Hi Simon,
Thanks - apart from using SD cards (the SD slots are defined as the primaries in both bodies), that's EXACTLY the procedure I followed yesterday but the Load Settings option on the "E" stayed greyed out.

I'll try it again later today using CF cards and having no SD cards present.

FWIW, both bodies do have the same, latest, FW revisions loaded.

Thanks again. More later...

Pete

Hmmm. Perhaps there's a difference between the D800 firmware and the D800E firmware. Do both your cameras have L1.006?

Looks like other folk have had trouble too. See 3rd paragraph under 'More Quibbles & Gripes' here http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/nikon_d800__e_initial_impressions.shtml

And see the line directly above the 1st picture of the gold D800E box here http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d800.htm

Still no luck!

The firmware is identical according to the revisions listed for the multiple code segments. I guess my E must be one of the "special" ones - or is the problem with the non-E?

However, I have now transferred all the settings manually (a bit of a chore).

Obviously I'd like to keep these bodies in total sync so will probably make a call to Nikon on Monday to see if they can offer any words of wisdom.

I'll share the results of my call.

Thanks for your attempts to help,

Pete

Pete,

Provided you put the settings file in the correct place in the folder structure (and didn't delete the .BIN extension by accident), I can't think what else it could possibly be apart from the firmware.

I seem to remember the firmware downloads for the E and non-E are completely different sizes. There must be something that's not the same even if they've both got the same version numbers (A*.**/ B*.** / L*.***).

Hi Simon,
What are you doing up at this ungodly hour? Haven't you got anything better to do?

I haven't given up on this yet. BTW, I don't see any reason for the FW to be different with the two bodies. After all, the AA filter should have no effect on the image processing unless there is a colour cast of some sort.

I'm "computer literate" and an experienced photographer. I'll follow this until a clear endpoint - hopefully a solution that is guaranteed to work repeatably.

I'm a night owl and have just watched 'Cadfael' on ITV3 - does that count as 'anything better'? LOL.

PS. The firmware files have different names so something must surely be different.

D800: F-D800-V101W.exe
D800E: F-D800E-V101W.exe

According to Thom's book, settings cannot be moved between models.

So it is - I never spotted that section.

The 'internal name' thing would make sense. It would also explain why there are two firmware versions (E and non-E).

Thanks Guys! Maybe I'll not pursue the call to Nikon.

Oh well, it would have been nice to be able to synchronise the settings so easily.

Thanks again,

Pete
