"Getting NEF (RAW) images from D800 to Lightroom"

US

Hi,

I am wondering how everyone is getting RAW images from the D800, (that are NEF), into Lightroom?

I found if I convert them with the Nikon software provided, (View NX 2) I have to make them JPEGS just to get them into LR. And then, what's the point?

I want to edit them as RAW images.

Any ideas?? Please.

Thanks

What version of Lightroom are you using. Lightroom 4 supports the D800 image if you have the latest updates. You will need to have LR4 and the latest update to process NEF files.

ACR and DNG also support converting D800 NEFs. You just need the latest updates.

Using View NX2, you would have to convert to a 16 bit TIFF. Make sure you have the latest update and use the Convert command on the toolbar. Simply change JPEG to TIFF of your choice.

Thank you, Eric.

I have LR3. However, if you are telling me I do not have to convert my NEF files to use them in LR4, than I will upgrade! Is that correct??

I have wanting to upgrade anyway...and any steps I can avoid, I will!

Thank you for your help!

Kelly

That is correct. If you want to work with NEF files from the D800 and similar new cameras, you need LR4. It has a number of enhancements.

The upgrade is worth it. The new processing engine seems to produce better images.

You could also consider converting the images from NEF to Adobe's DNG format raw files on import. the DNG files will be smaller than equivalent TIFF .

I attended a LR4 course recently.....but I still prefer and continue to use Capture NX2
