If anyone would like to see a "real world" example of the D800 at high ISO, I did a little experiment tonight.

I grabbed a common cereal box and photographed it. With a 5:4 crop in the camera. I used the fine print on the side that has the nutritional value. I then pulled the RAW image into LR4, cleaned it as I would any ISO6400 image. Then exported it at full resolution.

I also went back and did a 10% crop of that image, and exported it as well.

This image was shot handheld, with a Nikon 70-200/2.8 lens with VR. It was shot at 1/60 of a second. Much like anyone might do if they were shooting at an ISO this high.

The test is not meant to be scientific. It is designed to be illustrative of just what a user might get if they had to shoot the D800 at high ISO, and then crop the image. A common scenario for sports or wildlife shooters.

H-mmm, the images all look very fuzzy to me.
And considering that box is just sitting there, I have to wonder what the result would be were it falling off the table when the shot was made.

I know that you are an excellent photographer, but frankly, I can obtain comparable quality images with my D7000 and a good lens. This is not a good case for the D800. Unless, maybe, if you are shooting underwater. Again, I know that you do great work. That is why I am very concerned with what I am viewing from the D800.

Maybe you're a better photographer than me. Wouldn't be the first time. I'm not sure I could do that with my D7000 and a good lens.

No, really, I am definitely not nearly as good a photographer as you -- not even close. That's why I am concerned with the D800 images. I was planning on purchasing a D800 fairly soon, but I may re-think this course of action. Alternatively, I have always wanted the 24 1.4G lens. Almost the same price. Hmmmm. Decisions, decisions. Please don't let this series of images dissuade you from a purchase. These are not mean to be technically "good" images. Believe me when I say that I am doing things with the D800 I couldn't possibly do with any other Nikon.

I have read a few times on here people comparing the D7000 high ISO capabilities to the D800 and all I can say is that my D7000 high ISO sucks compared to my D800.
I have my D7000 set to never shoot higher than 1600 because anything above 1600 is not usable for clients to me.

He doesn't own an 800 yet I shot a picture of my computer this morning at ISO 6400 and I'm amazed at how it turned out. Its in my gallery be sure to look at the EXIF and look at the shutter speed. Hand held BTW. I find the D800 quite a bit better than my D7000. The only downside to the 800 is you got to downsize the photos to upload to the gallery.
